Q. Jared, you'd been in kind of a mini slump head into that at-bat. Do you feel like you were slowly getting into it a little bit more heading into that at-bat, or did something click in that at-bat?

JARED JONES: I don't know if anything clicked in that at-bat. Coach Johnson pulled me aside after my second at-bat when I struck out and just said, you know, get back to seeing the ball and being myself and being in character in the box.

And that's something I had kind of lost focus of over the last couple of games. Just going out there with a clear mind and just trying to get a pitch up in the zone and put a good swing on it.

JAY JOHNSON: I'd love to be in a slump and have 23 homers. That never happened to me.

When Jay said that you could see Jared smile. Its the little things he does that really shows how much he loves these kids and knows just how to make them the best they can be. He is such a great coach.

Also, Jay's comment about Jones discipline at the plate was kind of funny. "If I had a body like him I'd be swinging for the fences every time I'm at the plate."

jay's response was awesome, however, jones' first AB he hit the cover off the ball.......just right him.....so i think he was seeing it well overall yesterday. glad he got that big one.

He's a 3 outcome guy for better or worse.

His defense has improved

He's gonna get his chance, but it's going to be somewhat of a long shot for him as the pitching gets better going up the ladder

He made a lot of progress from last year, so who knows

It's funny to watch guys on here pissing and moaning about plate discipline when we all know we'd be flailing away like idiots up there

I'm sure some of that is by design as well
Jay probably tells Jones when he looks like he's overmatched - just go take your hacks and you might run into one on some at bats

I think shaving that funky looking mustache helped. He reminded me of Matt Dillon in There’s something about Mary.

if someone doesnt get a hit in a game, the rant thinks they are in a slump.

they were literally saying Jones could not hit a curveball or hit with two stikes and he hits a grand slam on a 2-2 breaking ball lol

They were bitching about Tommy swinging at first pitches and he hit 2 first pitch grand slams in 3 games.

So do the hitting coaches.

If they can get him to just get competitive on outside breaking balls he should be fine.

Jones is the Pedro Cerrano of this baseball team. I just pray to Jobu he continues to mash the curveball

This is the funniest one to me. People are often posting that he swings at too many first pitches, all the while he is mashing first pitches.

If you are a really good hitter, the first pitch is likely to be the best pitch to hit you see in an at-bat. Pitchers try to get a strike in on the first pitch then work around the zone on guys like Tanks. That is why they smash so many first-pitch balls.

I was trying to think of who that reminded me of and you’re right on the money!
