My old one that been with me for 20 years is no longer functional. What your best recommendation?

What size? I've had some eBags Motherlode laptop bag and rollers for 20 years, and at worst I've had to replace a wheel assembly (for free.) Rollers domestically are 21", for 2 week trips I use the 25".
However, I always have a cheap arse MOLLE backpack as a carry on. Rando brands from Amazon, but I've had the same cheap Chinese backpack Reebow for six years, that I use for weekend trips, and as the carryon. I want to upgrade to a GoRuck GR2/GR3, but they're ten times the price. The GoRuck Bullet rucks are splendid, but those go on sale for under $100 on the reg, but the GR2/GR3 are $3-400. The Bullet you can probably fit two days worth of clothes and a laptop in, but I haul a shite ton of chargers, batteries, and toiletries domestically.

I have two and chose based on whether or not I am traveling solo and how much checked luggage I have.
One is a basic softy sided, two wheeled (can't stand spinners) that you can find at TJ Maxx and will last 10+ years and the other I use is a basic backpack duffel (when I have more checked baggage).
My suggestion, don't overthink it and don't overspend. Find something that has the features you like and make things simple.

This recent thread had some great suggestions.
I've used the eBag Motherlode Carry On for years and am generally happy with it. Expands. 2 wheels.
If I were to buy another bag, I'd probably would go with one in the TravelPro series.

I have an Away and have zero complaints.

If your old one lasted 20 years, buy that one again.

I expected to use it on that trip and then never again. However, it is very happily my go to now. It can be really small if it's not overly full OR you can utterly cram it with stuff and it expands nicely and still fits in the overhead bin (it's plenty tough enough to be checked also).
I just looked at it and this is the brand: DENCO
The one I have is similar to that, although there could be slight differences. Think about it, it's great.
For the same trip, I also bought a bunch of different luggage cubes. They have been utterly transformative for "modular" packing.
They're not exactly like this, but you can search around.
