Sitting outside watching him dig and play in the mud and he brings this over. What in tarnation is this? It’s soft to the touch. Is (was) it hibernating? Do I need to move?

Cicada. My dogs are dead set on digging up and eating every one of them.

They have emerged and are going crazy in NC now. I’ve never heard the “emergency vehicle” sound from the trees this loud during past emergences.

A young version of a periodical cicada.

It was probably not far from emerging, and would have gone through one more molt after emerging. A few hours after that molt it would have looked like the above picture.

I have thousands of them emerging around my place right now.
