Sitting outside watching him dig and play in the mud and he brings this over. What in tarnation is this? It’s soft to the touch. Is (was) it hibernating? Do I need to move?

Cicada. My dogs are dead set on digging up and eating every one of them.

Ok at least I don’t have to nuke my yard. It wiggles every now and then. Probably ticked that he woke too soon.

They have emerged and are going crazy in NC now. I’ve never heard the “emergency vehicle” sound from the trees this loud during past emergences.

We’re supposed to have a super swarm of cicadas this summer. Only happens every hundred years or something

A young version of a periodical cicada.
It was probably not far from emerging, and would have gone through one more molt after emerging. A few hours after that molt it would have looked like the above picture.
I have thousands of them emerging around my place right now.

Y'all are a bit ahead of us here in north AL emergence. Today was the first day they've really started trying to sing. It is usually a week or so after emergence really starts before they'll start to sing in chorus. Only the males sing to attract the females. Different broods that emerge in the same area can have different songs that some people can tell apart. I'm not one of those people, it all just sounds like racket to me.

when we lived in Longview our weenie dog would have a field day on digging them up and eating them. little holes everywhere

east Ala is eaten up with them. the whirring at home is almost intolerable during the day. liken it to some cheap sound effects from the old Star Trek series. now there flying and ending up all over the ground.

I counted 23 just on my porch this morning. They're starting to sing today, but still a couple days away from full chorus.
