Hiring a new General Manager, what are you looking for?

You own the franchise, in whatever sport you decide. You need to hire a GM; what qualities, experience, and attributes are you looking for to make the hire?
Also, are you willing to give a person their first job as head of the program, or do you want somebody who has held the job before?

depends on the sport, MLB GM's job needs different skills than an NBA's GM job

I value experience, so I’d hire the one guy with 35 years of experience and multiple championships.

A 20-something stats nerd who nearly won his fantasy league 3 years in a row.

Really not all that different from choosing a leader in any organization in any industry, traits-wise. Someone who understands they're not the smartest person in every room they walk into, surrounds themselves with smart people and allows them the freedom to do their job within the parameters the organization has set for them, creates an environment that welcomes others' advice/suggestions, and uses those suggestions to make the most informed decision they can.
Lastly, decisive. There's going to be times they make the wrong call, no one is perfect. But, I'd want someone who acts decisively with the most up-to-date information available. Indecision is a killer.
I'd be fine hiring someone who hasn't been the head person before if they had provable experience working just under the head guy somewhere else and has good references from that stop.

Thinking about it from an MLB perspective, I'd want a GM with a vision and the wherewithal to execute. I don't love moneyball, but they'd need to find a happy medium between analytics and old school, gut instinct scouting. I'd be more concerned with building a team of guys as opposed to spending big and making one or two splash signings.

Will look over the resume and make sure he (ok she) hasn't worked for the Pelicans. Would throw the resume in the trash.
