Not for long
St George ISD has to get funded for this to happen.
Tea leaves are reading like that will happen but nothing is 100% certain.
If the legislature funds it at a 2/3 majority and all challenges fall flat, it has happened.
Or if the legislature changes the law on how to do this, it is likely a done deal.

Actually first started with Kip Holden as mayor. He along with the legislature tried to such this down.
Kip pulled some underhanded shite but the city was run well enough to have probably withstood an actual vote as opposed to the Clerk of Court shitcanning it.
SWB? She fricked up things so badly that it made this an inevitability. Which is funny as hell given that she was one of the CBC members who said “If you want your ISD, make a city first.”

Sure they’ll try, but they no longer have standing. The legal fight is dead, it’s going to happen much sooner than later
Over the city? Yes.
Over a new school district? No.
Look for EBRPSS to argue this would be a civil rights violation and get an injunction. They have the right judges in the Middle District for it.

This will be quick work. They are null as a matter of statute.
It will be litigated to the LASC and will take years

State legislature already approved the boundaries for it around a decade ago and IIRC it was a somewhat mixed area as opposed to the lily white one it is portrayed as.
It can be argued that the time for EBRPSS to have made such a fight was when it was put into law, not when funding was secured for it to make it operative.

St. George upheld what now?
there will be new sewerage dept, police dept, fire dept, tax accessor, school boards.
new local sales taxes and property taxes
they will hold elections on getting all of that set up

sewerage dept
Parish, not city.
quote:
police dept,
Not immediately (if ever). By law, there would have to be a Chief of Police.
quote:
fire dept
Already exists (St. George FD)
quote:
tax accessor,
Assessor - parish office

school boards.
Yes - once a school district is established
Mayor and City Council will be appointed by Governor, pending elections.

Seeer system belongs to the Parish, but I suspect there will be a public works dept.
quote:by law I believe therff Ed has to be a police chief. The size of the dept. is up in the air.
police dept
quote:No, there are already fire districts in place.
fire dept, tax
quote:No, the tax assessor is a parish official.
tax accessor,
quote:The City of SG will not be in the school business.
school boards

new local sales taxes and property taxes
I expect Sales taxes and property taxes currently in place will remain in place. They were all put in place by the voters. I can’t see any new taxes in the immediate future, but who knows?

Is there a list of all businesses and areas that annexed?
Was in one of the other STG threads (either here or in OT).
I know United Plaza and Lipsey's properties were mentioned. I am certain there are others.

Yes they will. What do you think started this whole thing? There will be separate St. George school district.

I thought Woodlawn is outside of St. George. I would think they eventually build their own school system. Maybe I’m missing something though.
Why did you think this?

No. It started when folk in the SE part East Baton Rouge Parish (Woodlawn district) wanted to form an independent school district. Sharon Weston Broome, then a state senator, and Pat Smith told them they had to form a city in order to have this school district. Kip tried to stop the incorporation, but the whole ordeal falls squarely on SWB's shoulders.

It took Central just two years from when they voted to incorporate until a new school district was implemented.
I could see this taking a little longer just because it’s larger.
Then again, there is only one public high school in that area. Sort of a symptom of them being neglected for so long. They were right to incorporate.

Meanwhile, years of lawfare will probably also be occurring in regards to property annexed by BR since the St. George petition.
Anything annexed into BR after the 2019 vote is nullified. Anything annexed before (L'Auberge Casino, Mall of LA, Essen/Siegen Lanes) stays in BR.

I’d gladly pay more in property and sales and use tax if it means that the city services will be badass.

No. DPW is a parish function.

police dept,
Eventually.

Already have one...actually two: St. George and Eastside.

tax accessor,
It's "assessor," and no. That's a parish function.

school boards.
Eventually.

Casino, mall, hospitals will be in BR. United Plaza businesses (Essen) and Lipseys (Siegen) were requested and approved after the petition began to circulate so those will likely get rolled back.

Thanks. I thought Essen was annexed prior to 2019.

They did get OLOL on Essen, the General on Bluebonnet, and Siegen Marketplace so kind of a mishmash of places on Essen, Bluebonnet, and then Siegen.

The City won’t be in the school business. The city won’t run schools. The mayor won’t run the schools.
Eventually a new school district will be created by a school board and not the city. It will not be financed with city funds. It will have its own revenue streams.
