Penix wasn't lasting till the 2nd.
So you let some other QB desperate team reach for him. Or even better, land an extra 1st or 2nd rounder and trade back with a desperate team.

They don’t want to pay 6 or 8 million for a veteran backup.
They have Taylor Heinicke on roster already.

If you're spending a top 10 pick on an old, low ceiling QB because you're worried about your newly signed starter getting hurt, you should be fired.
Signing Cousins to that contract makes sense. Using a top 10 pick on a QB also makes sense (although I'm not sold on Penix AT ALL). Doing both in the same offseason makes no sense. It sends mixed signals to the team and the fans. Giving Cousins $100M signifies you're looking to win now. Using a top 10 pick on a QB AFTER giving Cousins $100M says you don't care about winning now.
If the offseason happened in reverse order and the Falcons spent the #8 pick on a QB, they wouldn't have turned around and signed another QB to a $100M contract.
They have to think Penix is the next Mahomes for this to make any sense, and he is very, very, very fricking far from that.

I like what the Falcons did. They essentially locked up their QB situation for the next 10-15 years.

Cousins' deal includes a $50 million signing bonus and $90 million guaranteed over the next two seasons with an additional $10 million guaranteed in 2026 for a whopping $100 million total in guarantees
Taylor Heinick restructured his deal and last month received a $1.32 million roster bonus, which was converted into a signing bonus. Heinicke's cap number to $4.53 million. If the Falcons were to release him at this point, he would cost $3.32 million in dead money
The No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is projected to receive a four-year contract worth $22.8 million with a signing bonus of $13.4 million.
to make matters worse they are going to lose draft picks for tampering

No one was sold on Mahomes either. I'm not comparing the two, just making a point.
Penix is the 2nd most talented QB in this draft behind Caleb IMO. And he will end up being one of the two that turns into a legit franchise QB.

If Penix turns out to be great, of course this was smart. But the odds of a player considered to be the 4th-6th best QB in the draft being a franchise QB are incredibly low. In a normal draft without so much QB desperation, Penix gets drafted in the 3rd-4th round.

He was only ranked that low due to his past injuries.
I'm terms of overall talent and actual QB play, only Caleb is better IMO. And 3 teams wanted to jump into the top-10 to draft him.

Apparently the GM didn't listen. Orhorhoro? This early? Bad pick.

frick Fontenot. Jesus Christ. Send that piece of shite on the next Amtrak back to New Orleans where he belongs.

Cousins coming off injury and is 35

Leverage in contract negotiations down the road with Cousins.
The didn’t know the rookie would be available to them when FA rolled around.
Then why invest insane money to Cousins? Either go all in or don't? I don't know, but it seems like a strange move. However, we shall see. Penix may be great down the road, but they could have loaded up more with just Penix or just Cousins.

And the Falcons didn’t take the huge draft haul to improve the defense? Now it looks even worse.

Falcons were bad in defense and just paid big money for Cousins.
It makes no sense that they didn’t pick defense at #8. None.

You must fund your retirement with lottery tickets

Penix is going to be a much better pro than Maye.
Weren't you on the Zach Wilson train a couple of years back?
How'd that work out?
Penix is 24 years old and if you draft a 24 year old QB with a top 10 pick he better be a starter in week one...which obviously won't happen.
Either Cousins was a huge blunder or Penix is or potentially both.
Fontenot is a clown and has no business near a NFL draft.

I'd have been happy with an offensive tackle. That's a bigger need than non-Falcons fans realize.

Can anyone explain to me why the Falcons did go Penix in Round 1?
Round 2 wasn't any better traded up to take a guy that was projected mid 3rd round
