Who Had the Greatest Colonial Power in History?

Looking back at history and the great powers in history, who do you think had the greatest colonial presence and power? The French? Spanish? English? Portuguese?
Or do you think the greatest goes back further than that?
My vote would have to be the Spanish. They colonized so much of the New World (South, Central, and North America) and their influence is still felt today. Look at all the countries who still speak Spanish. The British are a close second. Agree or Disagree?

Def the Brits.
Has there ever been an empire that wasn't (ultimately) made dramatically weaker because of their colonial ambitions?

Genghis Khan. He had the largest empire in terms of square mileage and total land

It's really no contest...Britain controlled 26% of the planet at one point. Only the Mongols could compete

Pretty easily the British.
The Spaniards may have taken a lot but couldn't hold them at all.

His navy did poorly against the Japanese.
But I'll agree with the Mongols at #1, what they did was incredible. And it's amazing that they could have conceivably taken Japan without poor luck with the weather. The rifle ended their domination.
Rome at #2. That fall is what we need to learn from.
The Brits take the Bronze Medal for empire, and the Gold for best navy during the time of empires. The navy made all the difference.

Were the Dutch a colonial power? I never hear much about their colonies and how big of a presence they were. Obviously not much compared to the Brits and Spaniards.

Khan was able to conquer 11,000,000 square miles with no muskets or cannons. Still pretty damn impressive. But yeah as soon as he died and muskets became more mainstream the Mongol empire collapsed like a deck of cards

It's Britain and it isn't even close (although I probably put the Spanish second). The Royal Navy was their ultimate trump card.
The Spaniards got the early lead, but were too exploitative and short-sighted. Pound-for-pound, the Dutch did very well (as did the Portuguese). The French had some interesting colonies (not the least of which was New France), but always seemed to be "also rans" to either the British or Spanish (or both).
Compared to English?
If you just count Asia and Africa, there are probably 2 1/2 to 3 billion humans for which English is their second or third language and they are at least competent in that language. That's ignoring entire continents that English is the primary language (North America and Australia).

If you take out the one area there who militarily kicked them out, you are left with a lot of useless shite. Yeah, there are a few exceptions, but still. Also, that map seems to include parts of Louisiana (meaning the greater Mississippi Basin) that the Brits never claimed
Rome had basically all of Western Civilization.

The British never controlled the Philippines. That was Spain before we kicked them out in 1896.

There was that one little city that was once known as New Amsterdam.
