They played in sweaters. Touchdowns were worth 5 points. LSU’s first opponent in 1908 was “Young Men’s Gymnastic club of New Orleans”. No blacks allowed. No that wasnt even remotely the same thing as modern football.
So nobody should claim a World Series before 1947 (no blacks allowed), and especially 1920 (dead ball era)?
Nobody should claim an NBA title before the three point line and the time line?

I've already claimed it in my mind.

So what if they decided to go back to sweaters and leather hats? Would football end as you know it? If rugby players had to start wearing helmets would that begin the real rugby era?
The gymnasts matchup spiel did make me laugh.

Let me guess- you are young and dumb! LSU was named National Champions and should acknowledge the great athletes (Doc Fenton anyone?) that played on that 1908 team! Your claim that it wasn't football doesn't make sense, totally illogical comment!! YOU should be better than this!!

Whatever the fricking game was, we won the NC in it. As long as the playing field was even it counts.
Tigers dropped blood, sweat and tears in those games and to say it means nothing? That’s pussboy talk.
frick you pussboy.

And the football team has survived just fine. This affects nothing. Move on. It was almost 120 years ago. no one cares.
Love it when the non-LSU fans chime in.

The Forward Pass was first legal in the 1906 college football season. The 1908 season was the third full season of modern college football, as we know it today.
You can argue that football in 1905 and before that wasn't "real football" because no forward pass, but, arguing that 1908 football wasn't real football is silly.

Actually, I think if we’re going to claim 1908 we need to claim 2011.
- We had the most D-1 wins of any school in the country.
- We defeated the #1, #4 and #5 teams in the country
- Were named national champions by at least one NCAA recognized selection service
- we beat the champs of the Orange, Sugar and Rose Bowl.
- The BCS was full exposed for the sham it was and not a true championship determinant

did they win more games or go undefeated with the rules that were at hand? Then shut your pie hole and give the champions whats due.

LSU could claim 1935 and 1936 in addition to 1908, but can't be like Alabama. 1908 is a legitimate case tho, considering Tulane said LSU was playing professional athletes not enrolled in the university. And LSU was cleared of any wrong doing.

Seriously? Well over 100 years ago. Who cares?

I don’t understand why some of yall care so much about this. IMO claiming old titles this many years later is Aggie behavior.
We have 4 legitimate national titles, numerous legitimate SEC championships and 3 Heisman winners. Our program doesn’t need to claim old titles to make us look like a legit program.

A link I found. LSU was ranked 11. The Ivy League controlled it back then

First, I don't see where Alabama claims the 1908 NC. However, in LSU's defense, that team also played Texas A&M, Auburn, Mississippi State, Baylor, and Arkansas. Their opponents scored a total of 11 points (cumulatively) for the entire season. I didn't crunch the numbers but the average margin of victory was 30+ points per game.
Contrast that to 1908 Alabama. They only played 3 real teams - Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee. They lost to Georgia Tech, tied Georgia, and beat Tennessee 4-0. The rest of their schedule comprised teams such as Wetumpka, Chattanooga, Samford, and Haskell.
Again, I don't see where Alabama claims that title, but clearly LSU has the stronger case.
Regardless. LSU should claim the NC for 1908, especially if other sources have retroactively named them.

I’d say whenever they stopped playing in sweaters and leather hats. But let’s be honest real football started after 71’. But if it makes y’all sleep better at night to count that extra natty, go for it. Other teams do it so should we!!! Print the shirts!!
You’re right. It didn’t really become football until targeting penalties became a thing.
