quote:Here is what I imagine. A crazy intent on killing innocent kids shows up at the school and sees a sign that says "You are in Tennessee now. Our teachers are packing". The crazy immediately turns around and goes somewhere else.
I just keep imagining my teachers in elementary school owning or attempting to use a gun. I don’t think it would do a damn thing and I doubt any of those teachers would have the balls to pull a trigger, ever, and even if they did, to use it remotely accurately in a high pressure situation? Impossible.
We really don't have any data for or against teachers packing. We do have tons of data that show the crazy shooters choose gun free zones to do their carnage. We also have data that "Gun Free Zones" don't seem to work all that well.

If he had a gun in school I'd take it from him, and go home. If he pulled a gun I'd fight for my life because I'd know he was gunning for me.

The one concern I have is that 6 ft. 200 pounder just takes a gun away from a teacher.

The people who opposed this don't understand freedom. This never should have been restricted in the first place.

You may be correct on the trigger pull, but maybe there is one teacher in the school who isn’t. Hell, maybe there is a combat vet in that school when the moment comes.
After 40 hours of training they will know how to safely handle a weapon so I say why not give them a chance.
If it saves one life…

You’re going to get some down votes by simple reflex of some posters.
But, honestly, the idea of school teachers and staff all packing guns
just doesn’t add up to a safer school. It’s kind of looney tunes.

There was a time when segments of the population advocated for trained and armed individuals who could be called resource officers, sheriff's deputies or police officers assigned to schools. Then someone did the math to figure out how many would be needed and that was a large and staggering number that made it financially improbable.
The next thought was to improve police training and response times. It seemed good on paper until Ulvalde happened. Response was great, over 300 arrived but they did nothing.
Now you want teachers who are already under paid with many leaving the profession to be armed.

The program is reasonably well-structured, and MAYBE it has some deterrent value, but $100 says that the first person shot with a teacher’s gun will be an innocent student or teacher.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, is suggesting that. It’s hyperbolic bullschitt.

It has nothing to do with my wants. It’s strictly up to that fraction of teachers that want to, the ones willing to meet training requirements.

bullshite. If we can send hundreds of billions to protect Ukrainian children from the Russian boogeyman we can fund school safety.
Do you know there are millions in grant money waiting to be awarded for school safety upgrades but the grant process is so onerous schools can’t get through it? That money, whatever is unused, will go to the congressional general fund in 2026.

That isn't what this law or any like it does. It allows for them to carry a firearm, after training and evaluation.
The other thing these laws do is remove any notion that anti-gun zealots actually give a frick about the safety of schoolchildren.

...and it should be ignored. This kind of hyperbole repeated enough is an attempt to drive the conversation in a certain direction. They say it enough, and it becomes "Republicans want to force all teachers to arm themselves!"
It should be corrected, and no one interested in a discussion should take issue with it being pointed out.

had a teacher that was in Nam, He would scream I hate hippies, I hate hippies over and over, 20 times in a row. If you were to make fun of him or break/bend a leg on his chair so he bust his arse. Watch Out. If he had a gun in school I'd take it from him, and go home. If he pulled a gun I'd fight for my life because I'd know he was gunning for me.
I had one teacher say he was going to beat the sh** out of me and telling me about land rights in Texas. I said we live in LA. I then went on the what was then the beginning of the internet, called my x-stepdad about land rights in LA, proved him wrong, then he started swinging at me. Nut Job. This was middle school. My mom showed up and slapped him in the face. Haha. So I don't know about this.
I'll take things Things That Never Happened for $1000, Alec.

One of my history teachers in high school was a Green Beret and served in Vietnam. I have no doubt that if someone had come in to our classroom meaning to do harm, he'd have fought them with his bare hands. Thinking back about him and how he was, he clearly went through some shite.
Still, given the choice of him being armed or the weirdo who thinks he needs to kill people because they called him a weirdo, the choice is easy for me.
