re: Obscure “hair band” that is actually a good rock band? One of the ones I’m thinking of…

What about Stryper? They didn’t really have any huge radio or MTV hits other than “Honestly”. Lots of solid 80’s metal tunes that these guys put out, and they were unique in those days because they were a Christian metal band. They were one of the first 80’s hard rock bands I got into, when I bought their Greatest Hits CD back in the day.

What about Stryper?
They had two albums that went gold and a third that went platinum. The songs “Honestly” and “Free” at times were the #1 requested songs on MTV and “Calling On You” spent time as the #2 requested song on MTV.
That’s not “obscure” at all.

Stryper is still touring heavily and actually sounds just as good now as they did back in the day.

What songs did they have that were better than Walkin' Shoes (which wasn't that great to begin with)?
Just off that same album, Phantom Rider and Love's a Bitch.

Very nice list, except for Vain. Vain sucks moose cock.
Obviously I disagree about Vain, but

I would also add Saraya, Coney Hatch, House of Lords, Pretty Maids, and Tyketto.
Every one of these are great additions to the list.

I always thought Zebra was criminally underrated...but not sure if they count as obscure, or hair metal.

Now I'm just throwing out dumb names of D bands:
Sea Hags
Baton Rouge
Keel

WASP
Blackie Lawless and WASP helped start that whole scene in LA. Not obscure at all.
My answer to this question is gonna be Badlands.

I see your point, although one key member definitely was not obscure, that being Jake E. Lee.

Enuff Z'Nuff ? Strength is a solid album

Jake's participation didn't boost their exposure. First record sold 400,000 units, the second only 100,000. Both are great records.

Another obscure metal band I really liked was Lizzy Borden.

Here's some lesser known '80s songs that I like
Jetboy Feel the Shake
Sleeze Beez Stranger Than Paradise
Stage Dolls Still in Love
Kik Tracee Big Western Sky
Vandenberg Burning Heart
Dirty Looks Oh Ruby

The guys from Tesla were all very good musicians and they did not marry themselves to any particular sub-genre. Good blues, good hard rock. Really good acoustical sets.

quote:I kind of will allow it, though. They did have a pretty good bit of success, but always came in for scathing criticism because of the Christian thing. I think they have been consigned to the "obscure" heap and presumed to be dummies. But all members were highly skilled and they were a great band.

Has anyone heard the re-recording of old songs they did as "Second Coming"?
The re-recording of More Than a Man will melt your face

They're not obscure, but they are a great rock band that gets unfairly lumped in with hair metal: Tesla.
This was almost exactly my first train of thought seeing this thread title.
