Are the Pirates really going to wait until next year to call Skenes up?

He’s dominating in triple A. Seems like there would be major pressure in them if he continues.

I read in another thread they can maximize his contract if he’s called up after June 1st.

No. He'll be up at some point this year.

Well maybe that’s what they are waiting on. Well that isn’t far off at all. That would be nice if they called him up in June.

Not really. There is reason behind what they are doing, you just don’t understand how it all works.

It’s makes sense if that’s what is happening. Obviously any Joe Blow can see his potential, but I’m sure the people in charge know what they’re doing.
It’s going to be exciting for all of us to see him toe that rubber in the show for the first time.

No. There is a process and strategy to how they are handling it. As others have said, they can maximize his contract if they wait until June.
Sometimes its ok to just trust that the guys who do this for a living, have a better understanding than most.

Teams don’t want their young pitchers to have drastic IP increases from one year to the next. Skenes threw 130 innings last year. Their goal for him this year is probably around 160. If he was an everyday starter in the majors opening day he’d blow by that. They’re trying to avoid a Strasburg or Joba situation where they can’t pitch him at the end of the year in a playoff run.
It’s not rocket science

I’m not sure he will be able to crack that rotation. They’re by far the best in MLB.

Yep. And if the pirates start stinking it up and already 20 games out in June, he will stay in the minors for the rest of the year.

quote:at 3 innings an outing, he’d need 53 outings to get to 160. “Every day starting pitchers” in MLB throw 170-200 innings a year. Thats not a whole lot more than 160 for a starter.

The pirates are manipulating his service time. Thats the only reason he’s in the minors

You seem very dialed in and consider yourself to have more knowledge than most here. So should they just shut him down now to manage him for the back half and their playoff run?
The OP wasn’t discussing load management. The question was when he would be called up.
It wasn’t rocket science nor was it written Japanese

Is this a joke Paul?

To go a the full season without him at least in some mid relief or closing at some point you are correct I wouldn’t understand

Well here’s the thing, they are only 20 games into a 162 game season.

Well that I think was the question above.
Will he go the full season without getting called up?
I’m suggesting that would be crazy.

It’s a process dude, not a matter of how he’s throwing.

You will see him get stretched out a couple of times in Triple A before he is called up.

He’s starting when he comes up. No ifs, ands or buts.
