Subsidies to farms and corporations suck too.
Its vote buying, nothing more. I'm a Ron Paul guy, not a Bernie Bro

Your justifications for your situation are weird as hell.
Yep, never took him for one of "them"

Why does that matter? If you are in a field that costs a lot it likely pays extremely well at some point.
If it doesn’t pay well, that was your own ignorant decision
Sorry just seeing this. I am in a field that pays very well, but would be paid even better if I was in the private sector. I enjoy my job, and am not likely to jump to the private sector after my loans are forgiven.
Oddly enough, I would have paid my loans off in full using the income based repayment system before the 10 year mark, but with the deferment on student loans due to coronavirus I will be able to have a lot of them forgiven. That being said, I pay a ton in taxes every year.

It's been explained multiple times it's not the same thing. Hell, you can deduct student loan interest payments too , it's double taxation issues more than anything else.
And the student loan interest deduction is capped at a grand total of $2,500 at a MAGI of $70,000. It phases out to zero at $85,000. Hardly comparable.

Voted for Rand Paul in 2016 myself baw.
I don't need to justify anything. The PSLF program was in place long before I took out student loans.
Why on earth would I voluntarily give our corrupt arse government more of my money?

quote:PSLF has always been non taxable. The 20-25 year standard forgiveness is taxable.
So long as the forgiveness is taxable income (as any other forgiven loan would be), that's fine.

You didn't answer my question a few pages back. Does this mean you're for abolishing the GI bill too?
I consider serving in the military a whole lot more vital than encouraging more people to work in Government and create more bureaucratic red tape and BS so they can keep their jobs so no.

Not technically. Over 10 years I'd earn another 10-15k a year working elsewhere. Which would come out to 100-150k over the 10 year frame.
Comes out to say $1000 a month extra. But after taxes, 401k contributions, insurance, etc. probably more like another $500 per month extra income.
My payment would go from $400 to $1100 to have them fully paid in 10 years.
So while I could technically earn more money over 10 years than what would be forgiven, I have more money to play with on a month to month basis going the forgiven route. Plus my schedule allows me to pick up side work in the for-profit space where I can make more anyway.
This is really no different than a couple having kids but never marrying while he uses his mom's address so she can claim to be a single mother. You are all scheming to take advantage of entitlement programs.

Melt. Thanks to the save plan I'll be paying $400 instead of $1000 a month for another 5 years and will qualify for the same. 100k gone if approved.
Sounds like you’re a pussy who doesn’t honor contractual agreements

So you're for welfare queen handouts. Got it.
If you didn't want student debt you should've gone to trade school, not joined the military.

How about those of us who have an issue with all of it?
I have made several posts about farm subsidies and people here on the OT told me that we must subsidize farmers no matter what!
My town was full of farmers and they all constantly said how poor they were but lived in large houses and constantly drove new vehicles. None of them were nearly as poor as they claimed to be.
The same as you. If you paid more in taxes in the past 5 years than the $100K you are getting forgiven as you claimed then you clearly don't need the subsidy.

Not really. One is lying saying you are a single mother when you aren't. The other is following the program set up by the govt to get people to work in the public sector for less money.

You're really trying hard to make a silly point stick.
Also calling military veterans welfare queens is in bad taste on your part but you do you.

He said he works a side job using his degree to make extra money. The same degree he got subsidized. He is no different at scheming the system than the others.

But the government is still getting what it wants, which is him fulfilling his job in the public sector. You just seem to be jealous that he is hustling on the side.

Good ole welfare.
Paying off student loans just makes education more expensive, except for the well to do kids who benefit from them.

Cry some more. I worked the last 4 Christmas days while everyone else was home with family.
If you think you are going to make me feel bad for taking advantage of a program put in place a long time ago, it won't work.
