Have you ever had to fire someone over their pets?

An employee started fostering sick dogs that need a lot of ongoing vet care, which requires her to take off from work a lot. Her work has absolutely fell off a cliff, it's affecting other employees and causing service issues with our clients. We tried talking with her about her work but those dogs are like her world, nothing has changed and it's been months. She's probably going to be let go soon. I feel bad because she's a nice person and doing a noble thing but it's putting everyone else in a bind. What else can be done?
In case anyone is wondering, yes, she has tattoos and the dogs are non breed of peace mutts. No pics obviously.

If her work has fell off for that long and you tried talking to her about it nothing more you can do.

Sounds like she’s choosing to foster dogs over work.
If it’s affecting the company negatively and there is a proper paper trail, you shouldn’t feel bad.
This was her choice.
Weather she’s nice or not is irrelevant. It’s a job not a charity.

Anyways, if she has used all her PTO, and she’s been talked to and it continues, then you know what to do. At the end of the day, it’s still a business to run.

We have several vets in town that have unusual operating hours just for people like her. She needs to be able to compromise and start taking her dogs to one of those. Hell, we love the weekend vet office. They're a little more expensive, but the care is awesome.

People fire themselves...... she's not firing herself because she's a bad person and shes taking care of dogs. She's firing herself because her work has sucked for months.

Typical younger generation mentality. Their personal interest always are prioritized over work.
- work from home means running errands all throughout the day, taking calls from the park or a patio, 50% engagement during work hours.
- blow off work for excuses that would’ve never been accepted 20 years ago.
- entitled to raises/promotions by simply doing their job.
- deserve student loans forgiven
- Americans should have shorter work weeks
Nothing prioritized in their minds actually helps a company.

there is a real dog addiction problem in this country
my cousin's marriage is falling apart because she can't stop fostering dogs and gives them way too much of her time. it's nuts.

Company policy is that if you work for more than half a day, you don't have to take PTO. She's abusing the policy IMO because she's missing 5-12 hours per week and not having to take PTO. She is also taking PTO for sick days and other things so it's really compounding the issue.

Not sure of the extent or circumstances of the conversation you have had but perhaps she doesn’t realize her job is in jeopardy. If she is a good employee and performed well in the past, she could be worth an extra conversation where the stakes are explicitly stated.
