Smoke Laval

As bad as things were under Smoke, I looked this up on LSUsports.net
Raymond “Smoke” Laval served as LSU’s head baseball coach for five seasons (2002-2006) before resigning his position on June 4, 2006. In five years at the helm of the LSU program, he guided the Tigers to two College World Series berths, two NCAA Super Regional titles, three NCAA Regional championships, one SEC title, two SEC division championships and two Top 10 finishes. He resigned under pressure.
Point being, Jay has a ways to go. I’m not sure if I’ve seen a worst team fielded by LSU post Bertman.

My goodness. Get a fricking grip.
JJ hasn't been here for 5 seasons, so you can't even begin to draw that comparison. Smoke was also left a team coming off a college baseball dynasty run that will never be rivaled again.

Need unlimited down votes for a revision of history. Laval progressively got worse and did not win a title.

seriously?
we didn’t even make the field of 64 in 2011 and likely wouldn’t have in 2020 had that season played out.
we’re currently projected to be 2 Seed in a regional.
which isn’t anywhere close to missing the field all together.

What a terrible thread.
Smoke took over a program 1 year removed from a National Championship. He was gifted Omaha trips in back to back seasons and didn’t win a single game. Lost a home regional plus a Super to Rice.
Jay took over a program 12 years removed from a title and won it himself in his 2nd season.

This has to be one of the most short sighted dramatic takes on the rant. Ever.
Comparing a coach who inherited a dynasty and never won shite to a coach who inherited a stagnant program and won it all in 2 years. That’s rich
And I’ll say laval never stood a chance replacing a legend. But so be it. He took the job and failed after a while.

I had season tickets back then. Smoke got worse every year. Last year was so bad that PM dumped his four so called best players.

WE JUST WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Not sure how often it needs to be said... Smoke took over a Ferrari and crashed it in no time at all.
Before 2005, LSU had never missed a Super Regional... Smoke did.
Before 2006, LSU had not missed the postseason since 1988... Smoke did.

To this day, Mainieri doesn't get enough credit for how quickly he turned around Smoke's shitshow.
To take over the roster that he had in 2007 and have the team back in Omaha in 2008... and then win a natty in 09 was incredibly impressive.

To Destin to hang out with Ed Orgeron.

D1 will only have us projected there because they had projected as the #2 national seed to start the season.
Right now, we're being propped up by having such a good standing to start the season. If D1 baseball has us still in the field, it will be as one of the last remaining teams in, and it will have nothing to do with what we have (and haven't) accomplished this season.
The SEC has never gotten more than 11 teams in the postseason, right now, I think we're 12th in the conference.

No doubt, but let’s not forget that Smoke’s last signing class included Blake Dean, Ryan Schimpf, Sean Ochinco, Buzzy Hydel, and Jared Bradford. Plus Jared Mitchell from football. PM deserves a ton of credit, but he did inherit a talented freshman class.
