Since moving back to Texas I figured I would try hunting in West Texas because I never have and have read how fun it can be. I’ve had my cameras out for 5 days and have all kinds of critters running around.

So far it’s got plenty of Turkeys, hogs, whitetail and for the exotics Aoudad and Axis. There’s another kind that seems to be Sika but I’m not 100% sure on that so I was hoping someone with a little more experience can let me know. Also need help on if the Axis and Aoudad are shooters.

I would think this has to be close to a shooter but I have no clue.

I’m thinking this is a Sika.

Not sure if this Aoudad is the same as the one up top but I have seen two groups of two so far and this one by itself.

I know the one in the front here is not a shooter but are the back left and right shooters? I’ll be terrible at judging them at first.

When this image is put into Google it says it could be a spotted fallow or sika. Could be the same critter as above but you can see the spots on this one way better than the other ones.

The axis in pic 8 and the one in the background on right in pic 96 look like shooters to me

Do you have specific parameters that they have to be according to lease or you just want a mature one that’s 32+ inches?

1st pic made me think of the old Adam Sandler skit about the goat in the back of the truck.

quote:

we heard him beating the shite out of you a couple of nights ago. You guys heard that? Yeah. Where were you? At my house. You--f--he was fricking beating me loud, huh? Oh yeah, he was screaming. He was going off that night. He's got this new hickory stick and he fricking goes off with that thing. He was really lacing into me. Apparantely he found out bad news that his ex-wife was fricking his brother or something like that and he went off the fricking deep end man, just fricking--first time he used fists. You know, usually he hits me with the stick, and just fricking whacks away. This time he dropped the stick, and you know, he fought me like fricking 30's style boxing, putting the dukes up, I'm like I got fricking no dukes old man, relax.

I'm located about an hour south of San Antonio and I would be more than happy to rid you of all of those corn thieving turkeys you have.

So my company had a lease in Mountain Home for 30+ years that I hunted for 12-13 seasons before the land owner sold the property in 2018. We had everything on it, Whitetail, Sika, Axis, Aoudad, Blackbuck, Mouflon, Turkeys, spanish goats, etc. The land owner got rid of all the Aoudad because they would destroy all of the feeders by ramming the legs until they fell over. When I first started going there in 2006, we had planty of Sika. Then they all just sort of disappeared. We would have a client every now and then say they saw a Sika, but none of us ever saw any the last few years. I think they were mistaken because Sika don't hide deep in the cover like Whitetail and Axis. I will say this about the hill country. Droughts and hard freezes are very hard on the herds. We lost the entire blackbuck heard during whatever freeze it was where it stayed below freezing for 3-4 days. We had to bring in a new herd to repopulate the property. We also had a really strong 8 point gene where almost every buck was an 8. A few 10's here and there but 90% were 8 points. I really miss that place. It was beautiful over there. Natural spring ponds with monster bass, cliffs everywhere, animals everywhere. Just an awesome place to spend time and hunt.

Our place was just off the Junction highway between Mountain Home and Ingram.

If you want Audads on your place then those aren't shooters. However audads will take a place over quick so most people try to wipe them out.

Audad are great eating, don't let anybody convince you otherwise until you try them. Grew up hunting near Junction with my dad and we'd eat the hell out of them. The other folks on the lease would dump them.

Hey Rize , I got out of my lease in San Saba this year. Didn’t shoot anything but hogs for the last two years. The only reason I had it was for my son and I. If you need someone to take an Axis doe or two for the freezer, I live between Austin and Marble Falls.

That big axis is definitely a shooter. I'd leave the audad alone a few years. Sika are everywhere.

I owned and lived on a small hill country ranch that had a similar wildlife population.

After a couple of years of hunting it and observing I eventually got to the point where I would ONLY kill yearling Axis bucks.

They were larger than a whitetail and fantastic eating.

The Axis does are always either pregnant or nursing one.
