NIL and the transfer portal are to blame for the Gophers not hosting a public spring game

Head Coach PJ Fleck stated that he wanted "to keep things inside the best I possibly can keep things inside, with the way college football is changing," Fleck continued. "And then being able to have our fans be able to understand the changing of college football, the changing of college athletics. I think we have a Dinkytown Athletes practice that will be open to Dinkytown members. I want our fans, and urge our fans, to be a part of Dinkytown Athletes, which is going to give you a chance to be part of more things that we do."
Dinkytown indeed. Fleck isn't interested in watching his players audition for the Portal this spring. Could this work?

He’s not wrong - until there is some collective agreement to limit player movement- we are kidding ourselves to think college football is even close to how great the game was pre 2020… I’m an Ohio State guy - but I’ll take 15 straight years of SEC Champs or whatever it was if we could get rid of NIL and immediate transfer- only practical solution is to limit player movement through some collectively bargained agreement

Shouldn’t the conference step in and force him to have a spring game. It’s something they televise, do they not?

I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again, NIL has always been going on, it’s just that now the numbers are not rumors, or at least are not rumors as much as they used to be.
What’s killing NCAA football is the immediate and unlimited transfers due to the NCAA not allowing NIL to be tied to attendance at a university.

The idea that this is a result of inaction by the NCAA is silly. Any attempt to regulate or restrict athletes ability to earn money without a collective bargaining agreement would have been struck down by the courts. This can only be fixed by the student athletes forcing a union and collectively bargaining, or by Congress. Athletes have little incentive to collectively bargain, so all that’s left is Congress.

Fleck is a mega-douche with his quarter zip and tie look

Yes and no... certain programs had supporters willing to risk infractions or whatever the NCAA would do... now supporters who wouldn't risk damage to a university reputation under the old rules can support players financially...but you right NIL wouldn't be as bad without the transfer rule

The numbers are 10x what they were before. Maybe more. This isn’t some local alum slipping Johnny a sack of hundreds. There are publicly traded companies involved. There are rich alums who never would’ve considered giving illicit cash, participating in NIL.
Say “it’s always been like this” is completely wrong.

The Gophers will play a spring game but the fans and media can't watch as it looks now. I guess when I read this new approach to what is about to become a huge problem, is how the players will feel about not getting their tape out there for NIL and the Portal.
Fleck is either brilliant or about to see the handwriting on the wall with his players. I guess the April 15 window will tell the tale.

Spring games are glorified practice and an excuse for fans to tailgate.
