That was a good team (ranked 16 to start the season) who underperformed early, found their footing a bit, then lost a key player to injury in ACC play. Whittenburg. Once they got him back they came together at just the right time.

They were a 6 seed in the NCAAT. So it’s not like they were bums (though they may not have gotten in if they didn’t win the NCAAT). The bracket somewhat worked in their favor when they got to avoid UCLA in the Sweet 16. In the Final Four they got a good, but not great Georgia who went .500 in SEC play team while Houston had to play top 3 Louisville team in a track-meet semifinal game.

That said, NC State still had to beat a great Houston team…which they did. Still one of the best stories in NCAA Tournament history. But I think some think NC State was a scrappy underdog team like a FAU or Butler of years past. They weren’t. They were a good team who failed to play to their potential until the very end of the season

The comebacks they made late in almost all those games were incredible though, conference and NCAA tourney both. If they don't win the ACCT they are out of the tourney.
Then they come from way behind over and over in the NCAAT until they finally get a blowout against UGA.
It was a magical run.
