Sorry, didn't mean to ignore you earlier just a lot going on. Unfortunately, I'm just south of Birmingham so not in your range.
I have followed your advice and I've gone "hunting" a few times since the bite. It's all very surreal, I was fishing with my 9 year old daughter when it happened. I even told her to be on the lookout since it was warm, the snakes would be out sunning.
I follow all your snake threads on the OB, they have not only been educational but have made me respect snakes as animals. I have no intention of catching it and holding it, I understand it was defense for the snake. I still have to look out for my kids and pups and I'm in scorched earth mode.

While I enjoy my snakes, nothing beats a good dog. If you lived closer, I’d find them for you and hand them over for the shovel or the shotgun.

oh, did he pass? I didn't follow the whole thread, and you said he was in bad shape.
I'm sorry, man. My wife has a teacup yorkie, and she's an great little dog.

Part of the reason why we missed it. Treating one emergency and didn't think to check him too. That's on me, I could have got him there sooner if I was thinking to check him. He probably would have lived, I have to bear that part. He didn't deserve to go that way, and he deserved better from me as an owner.
What did the yorkie do? Just go inside and lie down?

He did pass. Just didn't get him there in time, we did what we could.
We always joke, he was almost 9 and he was our grumpy old pup. We say, every group of friends has their a-hole friend, he was our a-hole. Absolutely mean to people he didn't know, grumpy, don't you dare interrupt his sleep.
He was loyal, he loved our kids, and he was a little fighter, absolutely fearless. Wish I could have served him better.
Cheers to Buddy. He loved riding to the gas station with me for beef jerky.

Yes, he just came in the house, laid in bed and that was it. Zero blood, no signs of trauma, no pain, nothing.

Sorry to hear the little one didn't make it, good on you for doing all you could for him. Where was he bitten?
My grandpa had a big old pitbull as a ranch dog and that son of a bitch must've been bitten at least 5 separate times in the face by rattlesnakes, he was always fine. But I have two friends who lost dogs to rattlesnake bites in the leg, that's why I was curious where he was bitten.
I was bit by a moccasin, thankfully it was directly on my kneecap, and almost no venom got through. Still turned into a damn bowling ball but was fine a couple days later.

Don't blame yourself at all, sounds like he had a great life.

Man…you just described my Yorkie exactly. Also 9, and he’s the biggest a-hole but loves me (and only me) fiercely.
So sorry for your loss. And don’t blame yourself - you can only react to what you observe.

Yorkies are fearless. We've been blessed to have two in our family over the years.
I'm sorry for your loss but going out in battle is a death befitting a Yorkie.
Anyone who has over owned or known one knows what I mean.

Booga, my offer stands to find any cottonmouths around your pond if you’re within an hour or two of Folsom. Found 7 cottons on my creek today and caught a few.
Do you pin them when you catch them? That head hold looks like you would almost have to. A cottonmouth has always looked more menacing to me than most any other snake. They just look pissy with an attitude to match.

Team yorkie prayers sent. My yorkie rushes snakes and scares the crap out of me.

Unfortunately I saw a decent amount unfold. When the GSP started growling and barking I fussed at him and he got away, when Buddy came running down I knew he wouldn't listen, he was after it and if I had to guess he tore it up a good bit. Then the GSP ran back in and he got bit.
My guess is Buddy the Yorkie grabbed the snake and got bit, then the GSP ran in and got bit too.
My big boy (golden doodle) is lost without his brothers home. Hate to see a dog mourn.

Had a female Siberian husky get bit on the snout by a moccasin when she was about 3 years old. Swelled up like a guy allergic to peanuts and she could only breathe through her mouth and couldn't open her eyes. She toughed it out and it went away. Tough ol gal. She passed away curled up under a tree one night a few years later, in peace. Great dog.

So sorry to hear he didn’t make it. Sometimes these little dogs just don’t know how little they are.
I have a farm and multiple dogs and on the advice of an old country vet I carry an Epi-pen in the event of a snake bite. Thankfully I’ve never had to use it so I don’t honestly know what good it would do, but this old man knew everything there was to know about animals. He said that most animals die of anaphylaxis from a snake bite. He said a handful of Benadryl would do the same thing, but who can get a handful of pills down the throat of a snake bit dog.

Damn ... hate that for your fur buddy.
That sucks.
Been there, done that.

Yes, I pin with an elastic pinner so it’s not harmful to the snake (like a U-shape on the end with 1/4” latex tubing running across).
But if one tags my dog, it’s getting pinned with a shovel.

No one thought you wanted to be blown by a snake.
Anyone saying otherwise is a dumbass

Went down to the pond to fish for a minute. This dude was sitting there mouth open staring at me. Slithered into the pond, I ran to the other side, took off my work and snagged him with my rod. Got the shovel treatment.
Feels good to avenge my boys.
