Thanks all. Check out Cane this weekend
Pass by here at least once a year. What’s it like?

Went Saturday. Counted zero down to the lake and 16 coming back!
Only two about 7 feet and the rest were small.

Louisiana needs to extend alligator hunting for another month. The alligator population is getting overcrowded and dangerous.

Taking a new kayaker with us. He’s always getting snagged on a tree, even in open water.
Is Cane bayou safe for him given the prevalence of alligators? Or would fishing a different spot be advisable?

if that's the case, go all way down Lake Rd past Glockner's to Pontchartrain launch and fish the coves and inlets

I've seen some big boys in Cane Bayou.

I personally would take him somewhere else. The spot the other guy mentioned off of lake road is nearby and lot less encounters with gators. I would be afraid fishing with a cork or actively catching perch and using a stringer etc would entice the gators.
I had decent luck catching decent bass launching from the park near attendant hospital. Plus there is sand bars where you can be lazy.

Had this happen to me in Reggio last year. They usually dip out and appear further down the bayou. I watched this dinosaur crawl off the marsh and intersect my path. Then it stayed there awhile before it went under. It had to be every bit of 12ft or more. Almost shite myself and decided I was done fishing for the day
ETA: be careful in areas where a lot of them are present. Big one is bound to be somewhere nearby

Are you referring to the launch at the end, and go east/west along the lake shore ?

I have been kayak fishing 20+ years now and have never had an issue with a gator.
