If more people had chickens and picked their own eggs the world would be a better place.
Something calming about watching chickens scratch for bugs, or see a mother hen with a bunch of babies following her.

Get brown leghorns if you’re planning on free ranging. They lay daily and are damn near impossible to catch.

"taste like chicken" means everything likes to eat chicken, everything.
"chicken hawk", refer to first sentence.
"chicken wire" means their enclosure, has to be small mesh wire, tightly put together. If not, refer to first sentence.
"chicken shite" means there will be a lot of chicken shite, everywhere, everyday.
"chicken eggs" means there will be lots of chicken eggs. It will be fun, at first, giving them to friends and neighbors. You will need more friends because you will have lots of eggs, plenty eggs.
Other than the above, its fun to raise chickens.

How hard is it to go on vacation with chickens?

It ain’t for everyone, that is for sure, we have had them for about 7 years and still love it
Advice my brother in law gave me, at first get you a cheap coop from tractor supply or something, it will last a couple years before needing replacing at which point you will either of had enough of chickens and ready to get rid of it, or decide you like them and buy and or build something nicer and more permanent, we got out coop from chick chick coop out of farmerville, it is very well designed and built, it was pricey but we love it

Extremely. They are not good traveling companions, and they never pick up a check.

A fenced pen is best. You can find an automatic water dispenser at your local farm co-op. They will also have chicken feed. You will need a place for hens to nest. A little shed with some wooden boxes would work. You can find building plans online.

Chickens are a major PITA. That is indisputable. If they free range, apart from them crapping everywhere, they are very entertaining. You'll just sit on your porch and spend time watching them. They are well worth the effort if you are looking for a hobby. They cost a lot in time and effort. You'll have so many eggs sometimes, with 8 chickens... Free range eggs are the best.
I do not recommend getting chickens. They are not worth the time, cost and effort. I will get chickens again.
This is an honest opinion from an experienced position (many years/flocks).
I hope it is clear and helps you decide.

We have 2 coops and 2 runs. Very large ones, both coops are 8x8, one is half of a shed I built and we store all of the feed and everything there.
Chickens drink A LOT of water. We have 40 or so birds and anything under 10 gallons needs to be filled daily. We have 20 gallon garbage cans I converted to hold their food and water. The coops need to be closed at night, we have automatic coop doors that open and close at certain times.
The runs are 10 foot high, and 40x50 feet. Shavings in the coop are awful, don't do shavings. We have figured that sand is the easiest and do a mixture of sand and coop refresh to keep down on bugs. You can poop scoop the sand similar to litter.
We get about 12-16 eggs a day, if you do all of those things they are pretty low maintenance but if you have gallon water jugs and such, it's a daily chore.
