BG3 Won't Be Getting Any DLC

Larian Studios Won't Make Any More Baldur's Gate Games
Damn, I mean I'm fine with them moving onto their own IP but I would have loved some DLC/a Definitive Edition of BG3.

Now that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a huge success both critically and financially, people are looking forward to what’s next for developer Larian Studios. However, according to studio founder Swen Vincke, the future doesn’t lie with the Baldur’s Gate franchise or Dungeons & Dragons as a whole.
During a talk at the Game Developers Conference on Thursday (spotted by IGN and confirmed by Polygon in a video on the official conference TikTok), Vincke said that Larian won’t be working on any DLC, expansions, or a sequel for the game. It would be handing the IP back to Wizards of the Coast and moving on to unrelated projects.
“Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a heart — a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on, we’re going to move away from D&D, and we’re going to start making a new thing,” he said.

On the one hand, it sucks. No other way to say it.
On the other hand, I have a hard time being mad at them. They have basically infinite good will from gamers right now. And unless they burn another half decade on the next BG game, it will almost certainly be a disappointment. Much safer to move to something else with lower expectations, then if it flops, you can always come back and "save" the BG series.

Also possible they didn't like whatever the offer looked like for BG4 from WOTC. If they make DOS3, which they own the full IP for, and self publish again with similar success to BG3, they would make way more money without having to pay WOTC for the DnD IP.

That is sad. But I'm hoping the door is open for modders to create new content on the platform like a Dungeon master would in a regular D&D game.

im ok with this. i dont think they could capture that feel for a second time as well. Their games before bg3 were good and they can build from what they learned to give us something fresh.

The funny thing is technically both BG1 and 2 received DLC in the form of expansion packs

In reading some recent interviews, they also found designing a game around DnD 5e to be frustrating. I imagine they would be willing to continue designing games in this world, but they don't want to be constrained within that ruleset again.

With the rate graphics are advancing nowadays (i.e. a lot slower in the past 10 years than the prior 10) this isn't a bad call. BG3 will be played for the next decade (or two) by a healthy number of players because its just that good and has that much depth. I don't know what they could feasibly give us that would be enough of an upgrade over BG3 that would be worth the effort it would take from them to get there.

Continue the DOS series and I’ll be satisfied.

So am I. I was looking at the 137.2 GB of storage it takes up, versus the 33.5GB of Rogue Trader last night. Cyberpunk at 88.5GB. I can't remember how much space the last Pathfinder took up, but it was far less than BG3, from the same studio. I want to wipe it ASAP.
I don't need that kind of usage hanging around indefinitely on my SSDs.

I'm with you. With the state of affairs at Hasbro/WOTC, what used to be a license to print money (a D&D license) may be too restrictive for any developer going forward.
I say this as a pen and paper D&D veteran of many decades. I played many of the early/mid era games, including the OG Baldur's Gate, and D&D "adjacent" things like Bard's Tale, Wizardry and the like. Frankly, TES was more "D&D" than many licensed products.
Competition and expansion outside the confines of the IP have improved the genre, especially in the current D&D environment.

It was already a huge game with multiple ways to play. No need for DLC.
I think along with wanting to try something new, it would be almost impossible to top BG3.
No matter which direction they go, they will still be plagued by comparison to BG3. They are screwed. They were given a lot of time to complete the game. They might not have that luxury on their own.
