Hertz, one of the four largest car rental companies in the world, is replacing its CEO after the company reversed its bet on electric vehicle (EV) rentals over increasing costs.
Stephen Scherr will step down as Hertz Global Holdings Inc.’s chief executive officer and member of the company’s Board of Directors effective March 31, the company announced Friday. Scherr led Hertz for just over two years after spending nearly three decades at Goldman Sachs.
Scherr’s resignation comes as the car rental company struggles with the higher repair costs and low demand for EV rentals.
In January, Hertz announced in financial filings that it had made the "strategic decision" to sell approximately 20,000 EVs from its U.S. fleet, or about one-third of its global EV fleet, and to instead invest in gas-powered cars.

Couple down the street from a friend of mine...power goes out during a storm, causing a short to the EV that was charging in the garage. EV caught fire and the whole house burned to the ground. The EV burned for 3 days.
Part of the grand plan is to restripe parking garages leaving more space between vehicles, so that when one catches fire, it doesn't spread to other EVs.

like.. I don't understand these CEOs. are they so suckered in that they actually believe the propaganda shoved down our throats? it's like these people aren't doing any research, focus groups, or polling before changing the entire direction of a large company.
if I'm a business traveler there's no way in hell I want to add additional stress to myself by necessitating that I find a reliable way to recharge my EV in a unfamiliar city?
plus.. im guessing they're gonna charge more for a Tesla than a Camry.

I just had to take an EV as my rental car last week. What a pain in the arse. Never again.

What was wrong with it? I’ve only ridden in one that was a taxi, so haven’t been in one for extended periods.

All EV's are pushed by backstabbing lobbyists trying to earn a dollar. Same goes with climate control. AL Gore is worth around $200 million from this "climate crisis". Wake up people.
These mother scratchers do not give one frick about the climate. They just want your dollars to better themselves.

There is an old saying , “ if it ain’t broke , don’t try to fix it “. Like I’ve said I can drive all across the country with a gas powered vehicle . All I need and have to depend on is gas stations, which are all over the country . I dint have to stop if I don’t want to . With an EV it’s totally different .

EV rental cars was always a completely stupid arse idea. I recently met one of the guys who ran that lease deal for Hertz and he had some pretty funny commentary on the financial model and the assumptions they used that were totally bonkers.

There are kids operating lemonade stands that have a stronger business acumen than these guys running large organizations.

The charging. It wasn’t fully charged and the hotel charger was the slow version. Had to charge twice in 3 days.

They are being force fed the ESG requirements by the top banks in order to get cheap money for business capital. That’s why most of the major corporations went “woke” so they could get their corporate social credit score up.
See Bud Light, Delta, Boeing, etc
ESG took a huge hit but it’s being rebranded and will be resurrected soon enough.

So you haven't had to plan a trip around where you would be able to find a charging station. Or build an extra hour or two into your itinerary because when you get to the charging station you have to wait because some aren't operable and others are being used.

Well, this normally happens when you make crappy decisions as a CEO... I imagine Scherr has a golden parachute...

I bought an EV about three months ago. They are great cars for limited missions. But for most driving profiles they would be very inconvenient.
I'll start by saying that in every way they are superior to ICE vehicles except for two, but those two are doozies. Everyone knows what those are - range and recharging. The range issue is worse than most folks realize because the batteries really should not be charged above 80%. You can do it now and then, but it eats away at battery life, and the replacement batteries are super expensive. Also, EV drivers are less inclined to run to the end of their range because of anxiety about finding a recharge. The result is that the effective rage is from 80% to 10% of the battery, or 70% of what they say the range is.
None of this matters for me because I don't have a driving profile that requires more than 175 miles before the car is back in my garage for a night. And it fully recharges in about 12 hours or less.
I said there were two negatives about EVs, but that ignores a third...they are god-awful expensive. I don't predict a good ending to the EV experiment.

I think people are misreading the situation. he didn't get fired for going heavy on EVs. He is getting fired for not staying the course with it.

My friend's neighbors...the car was back in the garage charging for the night. Power outage caused the EV to catch fire.
The most common hassles certainly are range and recharging, but they are not the most serious. I've never heard of an ICE just igniting while turned off and sitting in a garage.
EV fires are much more difficult to put out.
One recent fire in Nashville.
