The late, great Les Grobstein was an overnight radio host in Chicago, and he always insisted Slap Shot was the greatest sports film of all time.

Hockey movies are the best sports movies, imo. And Slap Shot is the best.

I was living in Italy when this movie released. It was a huge hit, even there. I remember watching it in a theater in Vicenza with my Italian girlfriend at the time and everyone was laughing.
It's just one of those movies.
