Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar in 2015, but Family Dollar was a bigger mess than they anticipated, and nearly nine years later, they are still trying to straighten out the mess and fully integrate Family Dollar into the Dollar Tree brand.

Family Dollar will close 600 stores in the next few months, with 370 stores closing within the next couple of years as their leases expire. Dollar Tree will close 30 stores.

These discount stores have seen an uptick in shoppers recently, but the average shopper is spending less money per visit. Trashy stores and discount competition like Temu have also impacted their sales.

Another huge factor:
quote:

Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General and other discount stores have had longstanding theft issues, operating stores with just a handful of employees who have at times been victims of violent robberies and other crimes.

I was in one yesterday and when you walk in, there are huge posters of photos of the thieves.

I asked the very grouchy lady behind the counter what they do if the same people come back in. She said "they don't pay me enough to tackle 'em "

It's wild how many dollar generals there are in the rural South. You can drive like 10 miles and see 3 houses but 5 dollar general stores.

More like a "Hunnit Tree". Inflation has hit the dollar stores too.

Wherever I first saw this, the top comment was something like, 70 people are set to lose their jobs.

Since Family Dollar and Dollar General are usually across the street from each other, this makes sense.

I have been in one once. Team Dollar General all the way. The more haphazard the store is the better.

I do not believe this to be accurate as I have not seen any video on WorldStar showing theft at a Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, or Dollar General. This isn't Waffle House.

The entire staff at a dollar general in Shreveport walked out the other day. I’m sure they’re wasn’t any 5 finger discounts that morning

They opened a Family Dollar near my house. In 6 months it looked like it had been there 30 years.

Family Dollar was profitable back in the day. The Levine Foundation in Charlotte has sunk a ton of money into healthcare (Levine Cancer Institute) and the arts. Sold out at the right time.

Only one Family Dollar and one Dollar Tree without 2 miles of my house, 3 Dollar Generals within the same radius. I’ll go to Dollar General over Family Dollar everyday of the week. It might be the poor coming out in me but Dollar General stores in general have definitely improved over the last several years, Family Dollar is still a hot mess.

Their goal is to have a store within a few minutes drive of every house in America. Last I checked they had about 20,000 stores in the US. About 15,000 more than Wal Marks.
