Jared Jones' pitch recognition is improving, as evidenced by strikeout Sunday

Obviously everyone wants to see Bear cut down on the Ks. And the biggest impact on that would be cutting down on swinging at breaking balls outside of the strike zone. While he's not perfect there (no one really is), he's very clearly improving as the season goes on.
Here is a link to his plate appearance on Sunday where he struck out looking to end the 4th inning (maybe someone will be kind enough to post the screenshot). Jared Jones vs Payton Zabel ETA: The link doesn't take you directly to it for some reason. If you click the dropdown, it's AB #40.
Based on the pitch chart, we can tell the umpire was wrong. Strike 3 was a curveball out of the zone that was called a strike. In real time, we could see that as well. I even said out loud that even though he struck out, not swinging at that pitch showed improvement.
We're seeing growth from him, and hopefully it continues through conference games. If he continues on the track he's on, we'll be looking for a new first baseman for next season.

Great post.
It’s interesting how players get labeled and never shake that. Jones has 10 K’s this year. I don’t think that is awful for a slugger. Then there is Travinski, who gets praise from fans and announcers about his great eye, sitting at 9 K’s.

Maybe so, maybe not. What I know for sure though is that your IQ isn't 80.

I think he's been fine there.
Some things I think people need to remember about him playing first base:
- He's still a catcher in practice, because you need a lot of them.
- The NCAA restricts the amount of time coaches can spend with players.
- You can't practice first base alone.
If he were in the minor leagues, he'd be able to spend all of spring training working with infield specific instructors and former MLB firstbasemen moonlighting as spring training coaches. He'd also be able to work there as many hours in a given day as he wanted to.
Right now, he has to balance hitting, catching, and school, on top of adjusting to playing first base with a lack of allocable time and skill specific instruction.
HE'S DOING JUST FINE.

Why are you so upset by an obvious joke from a previous thread?

Great post, also a good time to bring up that time ell gave up on Jones one day before the opener.

I think he’s doing fine at 1st base but he can still be critiqued. He still stretches too early which puts him in a bad position when receiving the ball. I’m sure he’s been told not to do that several times and that’s not really something you need a coach present to work on.

The spread is Deichmann to Morgan, he's been above average defensively.

I don’t give a shite about the k’s in the context of pitch recognition.
His 69 Ks last year were a problem because he was striking out at almost twice the rate of the rest of the team (43% of his at bats compared to 24% of the team’s at bats) was striking out much more than drawing walks, and would not let himself get plunked by bad pitches.
This year he’s striking out 24% of his at bats, compared to the team’s 21%. He’s drawing as many walks as Ks, and has already taken as many plunks this season as he did all of last season.
He definitely has shown improvement thus far, and we should have no shits to give about his K’s since he leads the team in HRs and RBIs, meaning he is very productive with his at bats.
Even in the majors, K’s are ok if you either get on base at a high rate or lead your team in HRs and RBIs. Let’s not forget the days of Sammy Sosa being a strikeout king, back before he transitioned to a white man.

That's from AB#40. Was there another AB you were looking at?
According to the chart, pitches 1 and 4 were a strike and maybe 1" off the zone outside.
So while he may not be swinging at offspeed, I'd at least like him to take the bat off his shoulder and get another pitch to hit?
ETA: FWIW, IMO Bear has been well above average this year, so not shitting on him with my comment above, just noting that there's always room for improvement.

No.
As I said in the part you quoted, Strike 3 was a curveball out of the zone that was called a strike. Strike 1 was also a ball, but more borderline. Both good takes though.
