LSU site says he avg 43.6 ppg as a Freshman this adds 785 pts to his total 3667 plus 785 equals 4452 total points in his college career. Dale Brown is quoted with saying " Score 15 3point shots every game in your college career for 3 years to break Pete's record.

This is a 2016 Tiger Rag article about Pete at LSU.

I guess the point of this if you are going to push the Catlin Clark passing Pete. She has 32ppg in 4 years. You should give Pete's true numbers. So Catlin isn't passing up Pete's totals. She is a great player on girls team. To be honest kim Mulkey was just as athletic as Catlin Clark back in the Day.

I agree It’s absolutely ridiculous to compare the two . One not often brought up against Pete is he averaged over 30 shots a game. My earliest memories from Cow Palace was of him raining shots every possession in a set was a shot for him. The few fast breaks were another matter totally. Will never be a player like him but his particular situation was also unique.

So tired of hearing about this stupid arse Pistol/Clark comparison.

It's a discussion for people that lack myelin in their brain.

Records in popular culture are based on totals.

We talk about career hits or career HRs, or single season hits or HRs, not avg hits or avg HRs per season, or per game, etc.

I wonder if we can get AI to do a layover on every single one of PM's shots and determine which ones would've been considered 3 point shots.

Mark Cuban is sexist if he doesn’t draft the highest point total player college basketball history

Here's the real question: Who would you rather watch play a basketball game? End of story..... and for the record Pistol Pete was my idol on the basketball court growing up. Everyone likes to talk points but he was a magician w the basketball in his hands. Incredible entertainment. We all have heard the stories where the crowds were packed for the freshman game and then everyone would leave b/f the varsity took the court when Pete was a freshman. It's true!

If you put her in front of Pete, you have to put all men above women's records. While you are at it, combine baseball and softball stats. Track and field, gymnastics, swimming, etc.

100% agree. You cannot compare the two because it doesn’t matter who he was playing against while he was at LSU. He still made all those shots. To compare to to change all of Clark’s three-pointers to 2 pointers and see how many points she scores or track all of Pete’s 3’s. That’s the only fair comparison.

Dale Brown on Pistol Pete:

“If there was a 3-point line, I think he (would have had) nine points more per game just by the shots he took where he took them," Brown said, referencing a study on Maravich's shot distribution from former LSU reporter at The Advocate Sam King. "... And if he would have known there was a 3-point shot, or if there was a shot clock that would have sped things up, his record would have been totally impossible (to break). Houdini couldn't break his record."

Maravich also accomplished both feats without ever playing in an NCAA Tournament game – the field was significantly smaller in those days – or in an SEC Tournament game, as that event didn't exist when he played. Maravich did play in the NIT as a senior, but he also participated in fewer regular-season games (26) than what modern college teams play today.

Need to factor in the 3 point line. Pete never hit a shot behind the arc.
