Has there ever been any data on what Pete’s scoring total would have been in his 3 years at LSU with a 3 point line ?
Posted on 2/29/24 at 8:09 am to BatonrougeCajun
I think Dale charted his shots and said it would have been about 55 points per game.

A 4th season OR 3 point line estimate is 4,500 points rather than 3,600 plus that he had

Unpopular opinion but I doubt Pete would have scored as much if there was a 3 point line - it actually shrinks the court and players shooting and shot making development.
Defenses put a lot more focus on guarding 20+ feet from the basketball when those shots are worth 50% more points. Downvote away

Based on what he actually did, he would have averaged 55 points a game.
But if the 3-point line existed when he played, he would have taken more shots from that range and most experts say Pete would have averaged 60-65 points per game during his collegiate career.

He still has the record and forever will in my opinion.
If anyone ever asks me if i know who has scored the most points in the history of college basketball, men or women, i will say Pete Maravich

That’s the dumbest claim regarding Pete’s scoring record I’ve ever seen.

This basketball chick is going to be heralded by Mass Media as the new college scoring champ for political reasons. All attempts to introduce Reason, Facts and Logic into the analysis of the equation will be ignored by Mass Media.
I choose to ignore these provocations. You may choose to react with emotion to these provocations, but, just keep in mind, that's the objective of the provocation.
Ignore all chatter about this scoring record relative to this basketball chick. That is my advice.

It's okay if she's passes Pete. If anything it brings up how incredible his accomplishments were. Then it's mentioned about no 3 pt line, or his freshman year.

Yeah, S. Curry says otherwise

Pete didn't play women's basketball. The real question in the face of all the Clark hype (she is definitely great, but in a different sport) is how many point would Pete have scored if he played against women.

It’s an apples to oranges comparison. It’s a different sport between MBB vs WBB, and completely different era.
There’s no need to be so insecure about it. It’s ok to admit that both Pete Maravich and Caitlin Clark are both incredible players and two of the all time greats in their respective sports.
Caitlin is the most fun WBB I’ve watched in a long time, maybe ever.
That doesn’t take away from Pistol being such a great shooter that it took 40-50 years for players like Steph Curry or Clark show up to remind everyone how far ahead of everyone Pete was.

Here's a fact I haven't seen mentioned.
Pete's first /freshman year, he played ncaa men's freshman basketball with LSUs men's freshman team. The teams record was something like 17 and 1 and Pete scored 741 points. I'm not sure why those points wouldn't count towards his total college career points.
The math wouldn't be that hard, it's getting past ignorance that's the hard part. Come on NCAA/media, etc.

Dale's data was completely wrong and assumed almost all of his shots were 3 pointers and that he never made any foul shots.
Its been a long time but I did a deep dive into his math once and there was no chance that Pete took as many shots that would have been three pointers as dale claimed.
Dale claims a 55 point average with a 3 point line, which would be 11 more points than he averaged. that means he would have to make 11 3 pointers per game. Antoine Davis has the most career ncaa 3 pointers made and he only averaged 4 per game. not one player in the top 10 in totals 3s averaged over 4 per game except him. 0% chance pete would have averaged 11 per game.

Pete was so driven to score he would try and get fouled on layups so he could get a three point play. He’d slow down on breakaways in hopes of drawing a foul.
There’s no doubt in my mind that he would have taken the challenge and shot threes a lot more than what watching replays of his old games showed.

maybe he would have taken more chances, but he wouldn't be making triple what the highest average ever is. for reference, there have been 19 times an ncaa player has made 12 or more 3s in a game in history. Pete would have needed to average 11 over his career for Dale's math to be right.

My point is that the Mass Media message will refer to Maravich as the Ex-Champ and will herald Clark at the new Scoring Champ.
It's not a question of sharing the accolades - they will all fall on Clark.

No chance. Pistol is the GOAT but he averaged 44 PPG without a 3 point line, for him to average 60-65 PPG would mean that like 90% of his shots were 3 pointers. I don’t buy the Dale one either.
I think if Pete had a 3 point line, with as deadly a shooter as he was, teams would’ve doubled him on the perimeter constantly. You can’t really predict what he could’ve done but it wouldn’t just be as simple as “oh that shot he took was actually a 3 today”… the defenses changed too.
