seems unstoppable. Stagger Trigga, Hawk, and Ryan so two of those three are on the court with Zion whenever he's out there. When will Willie see the obvious?

It's real obvious until Trey and Hawk go out there and go 6 of 29..

Shooters shoot, but would you bet big money on Trey shooting 40%+ from three on any given night?

Then you cycle in Matt Ryan, CJ, etc... there are options. Coaching just needs to identify and put these guys in good position to contribute.

The guy who's having a down year and still shoots over 40% from 3 in 1 out of every 3 games he plays? The guy that averaged over 40% from 3 his first 147 games in the league?
That guy? The guy that shot 40% from 3 in 3 years in college as well, so he's basically shot 40% from 3 the last 5 years?

yeah, i still would bet big money on him shooting 40% from 3 on any given night. Trey didn't forget how to shoot.

Here's an interesting nugget i found about Trey though:

quote:

Murphy's favorite spots last season were in the right corner (44.2%), above the break on the right (42.9%), and at the top of the key (41.7%). The only area where the 23-year-old was under 40% from beyond the arc was on the left above the break. For some reason, that is now his most frequent shooting spot. Murphy is 29-77 (37.7%) from that area, only above 40% from the left corner (42.3%) and top of the key (40.7%).

quote:

Trey Murphy III's shot type and timing matter for Pelicans. Murphy was open or wide open on 60.1% of all 3-pointers last season. He shot better off of zero or one dribble (over 40% for both) and dropped to 27.3% on exactly two dribbles. This season he has a higher frequency of attempts (69.5%) and is missing a lot more of those open (31.5%) opportunities.

quote:

The 2023 NBA Dunk Contest runner-up is making 23.8% of all three-pointers when taking one dribble and 20% after two dribbles this season. Teams are covering and closing out on Murphy differently this season, leading to several indecisive, hesitant moments. Approximately 32% of Murphy's shots came within 10 feet of the rim of closer last season. This year those highlight reel rim runs are down to 23.3% frequency.

and i agree that at least TWO of CJ, Trey, Herb, Hawk, Ryan should be on the court at all times with Zion.

As a coach, you put the team in the best position to make plays and win.

IF Trey/Hawk keep going 6 for 29, then as shooters, that's a player problem, not a coaching problem.

no but other teams can’t leave him out there alone so that would hopefully help Zion get to the paint.

I feel like that plan always should have been Let Zion Drive and kick out to shooters and we kept adding weird pieces that couldn’t shoot 3s

luckily we’ve turned that around with Herb developing a 3 pointer, Murphy, Hawk

Two of Trey, Hawk, CJ, or Herb should always be paired with Zion. And, as often as possible 3 of them should be paired with him.
