re: Would a lever action 22 rifle make a good home defense gun?

While I keep a loaded 9mm in a small lockup next to my bed I also have a loaded Benelli M4 semiautomatic 12-gauge close by, filled with 9 rounds of Federal Flite Control 00 buck. If we have an intruder in the middle of the night I’m not counting on a rimfire to save my life. I don’t like the idea of being outgunned in a home invasion scenario

Yes, it looks like you have more respect for the .22 than most here.
Which is proof to me that you are better informed than most here.

The .22 is too light a load, right?
I would suspect the thousands in cemeteries put there by the lowly .22 might beg to differ.

I fully believe you have an AR10 at the ready and you just started this thread for kicks
My 8 year old son killed a 130lb hog in quick order with a handful of .22 shots from his little Rossi semiautomatic rifle.

My wife doesn’t like guns but she is very confident shooting my 10/22 that is one of the short barrel models.
Home defense is about confidence in the moment more than anything. A shotgun she would be more likely to hesitate woth and stumble to make ready.
That 10/22 she is confident operating and can put a bunch of rounds on target almost as fast as I can.
That’s why the .22 sits in the corner on her side.

Depends on intent.
Anything that goes bang is a great deterrent to 99.9% of home invaders.
Shotguns (pump action) have been "proven" to have a psychological effect due to the noise of chambering a round that is conditioned in many peoples minds from film/tv alone.
But, a .22 isn't great for stopping power. Rifles are not better than shotguns or pistols in close quarters. And, a lever action isn't as quick as other options.
All that said, back to the first point, anything that goes bang gets the vast majority of non-drugees or psychopaths out of your area after the first shot.

True, but only because pistols and shotguns aren't more prevalent in general issue.
An M4 is a great weapon, but it's a different scenario than combat.

In all seriousness, there's a vepr behind the bed with 10+1 of either 00 or No. 4. The second mag is slugs.
If I ever get to a second mag, over penetration is no longer a concern. I'm stacking bodies.

You'd have to pump about 409 rounds in a meth headed rager with a 22 unless you got a head shot
How about five in a three inch group with a 22LR pistol before you could snap off three rounds that miss with a 9mm?

I use my Field Master 22LR to dispose of wild pigs. Why? Because it’s cheap, it’s accurate, and it actually penetrates the brain better than 9mm and 38 special. The other cheaper rounds.

By trained operators. If you are competent and comfortable using a rifle in your house then go for it.
I would say that most people are not trained in techniques to clear a house with a rifle.

Yep. An 18" 12 ga with #1 buckshot is what sits next to my wife's side of the bed. I have a handgun, rifle with suppressor and an Estwing double bit axe (I can throw it like a champ if I need to be quiet or not light myself) within arm's reach of my side of the bed.
Damn son lol where do you live to think all of that is necessary within arms reach? Generally curious

No, a prosecutor told me the objective is to kill the intruder before he can get outside. Shoot him dead then put a bullet through your ceiling. You fired a warning shot, but the MFer kept coming.

But you are arguing for using a pistol?
Am i following this correctly?

Nothing will scare the piss out of an intruder like the sound of someone racking a 12 gauge.
The true gun lovers will take you to task over this but it has some truth in it. At the very least the intruder has the option of knowing you have a gun and walking off he wants to...its strictly up to the intruder at that point (not easy working a Jerry Clower into modern conversations)

My home defense is the best available...I live in a good area where the only crime committed is tax evasion and embezzlement. We seldom lock the doors. If I lived in an area where I thought I needed to be armed while I slept I would move.

No shite. We used to eat at a Mexican place close to the house on a regular basis until they started having an armed policeman at the front door on weekends. Haven't been back since...I have no idea what could have caused them to hire armed security but obviously something occurred otherwise they did it out of irrational fears...either way it ain't no place for sane folks.
