Former NRA chief Wayne LaPierre misspent gun rights group's money, owes more than $4M, jury finds.

The longtime head of the National Rifle Association, Wayne LaPierre, misspent millions of dollars of the organization’s money, using the funds to pay for an extravagant lifestyle that included exotic getaways and trips on private planes and superyachts, a New York jury determined Friday
quote:
The jury ordered LaPierre, 74, to repay almost $4.4 million to the powerful gun rights group that he led for three decades. It also ordered the NRA's retired finance chief, Wilson Phillips, to pay back the group $2 million. Jurors additionally found that the NRA omitted or misrepresented information in its tax filings and violated New York law by failing to adopt a whistleblower policy.
quote:
LaPierre sat stone-faced in the front row of the courtroom as the verdict was read aloud. New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat who campaigned on investigating the NRA’s not-for-profit status, declared the verdict a “major victory.” “In New York, you cannot get away with corruption and greed, no matter how powerful or influential you think you may be,” James said in a post on X. “Everyone, even the NRA and Wayne LaPierre, must play by the same rules.”

It’s not possible Lapierre actually did these things?

All white juries in the Deep South finding a black man guilty.
A travesty of justice!
But this?
Maybe. Maybe not.

I don’t think a conservative White man can get a fair hearing and an impartial jury in manhattan.

Pretty sure the NRA Board said the same thing a few years ago when they bounced him

On the one hand, frick Leticia James.
OTOH, frick Wayne LaPierre too. His crooked arse is the reason that I haven't renewed my membership in 15 years. Maybe I'll consider it now.

This. I think several long-time posters here were vocal about renouncing their memberships and supporting other gun organizations.

Yet she hasn't filed one damn charge against Andrew Cuomo.

he just retired in January

So instead of spending it all on lobbyists and politicians, he kept some for himself. If he had actually just used the money to pay off politicians and other K-Street whores, he'd be in the clear.

It’s not that he shouldn’t be held accountable if he broke laws. It’s just that it shouldn’t only be white conservative men that are held accountable.

The way the story is set up, may be misleading. Sounds like the jury felt that he needs to give the money back to the NRA. Not sure many New York liberals would generally rule in favor for a gun rights org.

This is a non-starter. LaPierre is a POS that deserves to be charged.
I'm actually surprised, because if I wanted to hurt the 2A movement, I'd leave him alone... he's done plenty of harm from the inside.
