Half full is the pessimistic. Full is good. But it's only half full. You're being negative.

Half empty is the optimistic. Empty is bad. But it's only half empty. You're looking on the bright side.

I have a different take.

Objectively:

If the glass starts empty, and you are filling it up, but stop half way, it is half full. The target is to fill it up, and you are halfway to getting it full.

If the glass starts full, and you start drinking it or pouring it out, and it gets down to half, it is half empty. The target is to get it empty, and you are halfway to getting it empty.

An empty glass
That last cigarette
It's closing time
And I'm drunk again

Who remembers that old one?

So both are optimistic in a "Livin' on a Prayer" kind of way

Neither pessimistic nor optimistic; but contextually objective.

No.

But I do believe it makes more sense to say you can’t eat your cake and have it too.

It’s not that the glass is half full or empty, it’s that it’s twice too big.

Fortune cookie I got about a month ago.
