Berra does not get the true credit he deserves. He was a master at his craft and was a great great hitter. You may not like this but I put Berra over Mantle on the all time Yankees list.

But if based are loaded, bottom of ninth, tie game and I need one hitter up to get that run in, it would be Tony Gwynn.
Why? Williams’ OBP was far far higher than Gwynn’s, .481 to .388. Bases loaded doesn’t even require you to get a hit to get the run in, just get on base. Williams did both better than Gwynn. So did a lot of players. In fact, Gwynn is 122nd all-time in OBP

Here are two career statlines. The slash lines are BA/SLG/OBP. All stats pulled from Baseball Reference.
Player A: .340/.448/.634, 1.082(!) OPS, 2700 hits, 1878 runs, 102 SB, 102 CS, 492 HR, 113.5 WAR, 2 MVPs, MVP runner ups, no Gold Gloves
Player B: .289/.412/.567, .979 OPS, 2157 hits, 1584 runs, 494 HR, 111.4 WAR, 3 MVPs, 2 MVP runner ups, 8 Gold Gloves
Player A is Lou Gehrig from 1925-1938 (removing very shortened seasons in 1923, 1924, and 1939 that dragged his numbers down a bit)
Player B is Barry Bonds from 1986-2000 (prior to his 2001-2004 steroid years)
Yes, pre-steroid Bonds had more career HRs than Lou Gehrig (his career total was 493).
Here are a few more.
Player A: .304/.394/.622, 1.016 OPS, 737 hits, 509 runs, 63 SB, 19 CS, 207 HR, 37.8 WAR, 1 MVP, 1 MVP runner up, 5 Gold Gloves
Player B: .308/.446/.619, 1.065 OPS, 766 hits, 572 runs, 166 SB, 46 CS, 198 HR, 41.5 WAR, 1 MVP, 4 Gold Gloves
Player A is Ken Griffey Jr from 1993-1997, his absolute peak years.
Player B is Barry Bonds in those same seasons, which were not his peak years.

You get no argument from me although I still have Mick higher.
Check out Yogi’s stats from 1950: 656 plate appearances, 116 runs scored, 30 doubles, 6 triples, 28 homers, 124 RBIs, .322 BA, .383 OBP, .533 slugging average.
AND STRUCK OUT TWELVE DAMN TIMES!
People strike out that much in a weekend series these days.

Griffey missed about a seasons worth of games from 1993-1997. And not those weren’t his peak years. Those would be 1995-1999 if you want to take a 5 year timeline

Availability was always an issue with him. That matters.

Using his best 5 year stretch does too. You didn’t

Do some research… mantle was the golden boy and was great but yogi was the glue for those great Yankees teams and has stats to back it up.

“Glue” is not a stat I can look up
The stats I can look up show Mantle was the best player in baseball when he played

Exactly, plus his leadership abilities.

Alright, what was the best 5 year stretch of Griffey's career? It was 1993-1997 according to baseball reference, but pick any 5 year stretch of Griffey's career and Bonds was better.
Bonds's career OPS was 1.051. Griffey only had one SEASON with a higher OPS than that.

Ok. You are showing stats are all that matter. Which is a total myth.

I acknowledge that Bench is the GOAT catcher but if I could have my choice of any catcher in history I would take Yogi (1.) just because and (2.) because he came to beat your arse.

I never said that. You said stats back it up. Well, they don’t if you want to use stats. You’re just throwing out a hot take to be different, just like your post about Tony Gwynn

I’m torn on that one.. bench was know for home runs as a hitter. He was great behind the plate, but how many of those teams won a title???

Yankees have said Berra was the heart and soul of all those championship teams.
But everyone is taking #7 over him.
Posted on 2/19/24 at 6:35 pm to lsufball19
No I’m not. Overall Berra was better than mantle… just like Ruth is better than bonds.

Pre juice it was .968. Crazy what juicing and a shite load of intentional walks will do for your OPS
