Me too.

I wasn't criticizing what you said, though I realize it probably did read that way. I just used it to piggyback off of and talk about how pleasantly surprised I was with the movement on his fastball since I had never actually seen him pitch before.

I actually only got to listen to G3 and haven’t been able to watch him for myself. On the radio they threw some movement stats out there that made it seem like his average fastball runs like a mediocre-to-good slider, but at 95.
Just read this part of your post. That's interesting. I was just going by what my eyes saw, but I'd love to see those stats you mention here. You could tell his fastball had run, but I didn't know it was quantified as comparable to a slider. That thing really is filthy.
But I think we're all on the same page that he's got to be able to command it. And not just for strikes, but in the zone as well. You don't want it starting out on the outer 3rd, then running back in into barrels in the middle of the plate. But obviously, the faster the pitch, the more room for error there is. You can get away with 95+ down the middle a lot more often than you can at 90. But when he gets his delivery tightened up to where it's repeatable and the ball is coming out of his hand from the same slot consistently, he's going to be devastating.

He needed that. Jay Johnson came out and had a good talk with him on the mound before taking the ball. Hopefully he learns and continues to grow

20+" of horizontal movement
him describing his 20" lateral movement
MLB fastball stats. Top 5 lefties have 16-17.7" of break
if you sort by sliders, the top lateral movement is 19.4".
I do not have the stats they were specifically quoting on the radio. Yes- there's a lot more to a slider than lateral movement. But they were making some comparisons in the lateral run and how he can look over the middle of the plate and jam righties or start throwing AT a lefty and break into the zone (or have them chase down and away) and was apparently pretty good at all 3 of those things.

That's awesome info. It's incredible how much they can track these days. Thanks for posting this.

People have to remember that lefties often look very awkward throwing the ball. While he pitched very poorly, he was consistent in his misses, which makes it much easier to fix the problem. When a pitcher is all over the place, you probably have multiple problems which makes it far more difficult to fix. He looked like he was trying to throw too hard and he was losing his balance and falling off towards first base. Hopefully they can dial him back so he can consistently throw strikes

It’s one outing
He had a good outing against ull in fall

I like your point in your comment. You meant 3rd base but that is what was going on. He seemed to be flying open with the front shoulder and twisting off his line toward 3rd base. Everything was missing arm side and arm side high. They should be able to see that pretty quickly on film and work on that to get it fixed.

You’re really spot on. He was throwing across his body when he first started, which is a sin for a lefty. He does have late movement (which is why Milazzo was subbed to catch him).
His release is hard to see with his size and arm angle. He is going to be a force out of the pen. His mechanics are steady improving with college coaching, as is his control. His reps will come in mid-week games as he continues to grow and develop as a pitcher. He’s actually closer than he appeared and needs minor tweaks and reps with his regular weekly throwing sessions. I’m high on this kid as a great lefty prospect and expect him to continue to develop.
“Was ranked as the No. 42 overall prospect in the nation entering the June 2023 Draft by MLB Pipeline.” Scouts seem to think he’s a diamond in the rough.
And if he hits the gym with Bear, he will be even more physically imposing on the mound. We gonna be LBU (LineBackerU) on the diamond. ????

His mechanics look horrible. That was very hard to watch
What’s wrong with his mechanics? Be specific please

Just wait until we play in Minute Maid. The Baseball Savant feed is going to give us a ton of info.

Nah, too much going on. No travel plans in the immediate future.

I think Cam's pops is a strength coach. He is familiar with the weight room. We can't forget that Cam battled an injury last season. I don't think he's out of shape, but I think he could use some conditioning. All of that will come. He's a not a finished product but it's a damn good foundation to mold. Yeskie is perfect for him.

What do you know about his desire to work?
Posted on 2/21/24 at 1:40 pm to DRock88
That was intended to be less a knock on Cam and more props to the commitment Bear made this offseason.
