Watched two or three episodes when it came out and I felt like I was watching SciFi channel garbage. I guess it gets better?

The first couple episodes are lower quality compared to the rest of the series, but you appreciate them more after the story picks up

I said something similar when I first started it. The first few episodes kind of drag and I was underwhelmed considering I had heard nothing but good things about it. They weren’t bad really, just was expecting more I guess. But it picks up and by the time you’re finished with the series it’ll most likely be ranked as one of your favorites. That’s how it was for me at least.
It’s that good.
ETA: as for the gay stuff, it’s not overwhelming and isn’t a main focus of the show. Just one of the characters happens to be gay. It wasn’t really a big deal from what I remember.
