Who trades up for JJ McCarthy?

From Colts beat writer
NFL Draft network has the Vikings moving up

The #NFL is significantly higher on JJ McCarthy than I ever could have imagined.
I had a direct source today share that a team in the NFC has him as their QB 2.
quote:
The more I watch the more potential I see in the kid but I agree QB 2 is WILD
But I've heard of 2 other teams that have him as QB 3.
Hes jumped to my QB 4 slot over the couple weeks of watching more film on him but it's clear the NFL is HIGH on him.

I've yet to hear of a team having McCarthy lower than QB 4 in this class.
Not saying there isn't one out there I just haven't heard of one.
NFL Draft network has the Vikings moving up
quote:
5. Minnesota Vikings (via trade-up with LAC)
J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
Another trade? YES! Minnesota knows its options are slim. They can either re-sign Kirk Cousins and avoid drafting a young signal-caller or make a move for one. J.J. McCarthy is loved more by NFL personnel/scouts than the general draft community. Pairing him with Kevin O'Connell, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison will allow his full skill set to blossom
Matt Miller from ESPN

“JJ McCarthy would be Joe Burrow if he were on a team that threw the ball” is what one scout had to say, per @nfldraftscout ??
Currently QB4, McCarthy has been mocked to the #Vikings and #Giants, much to the polarization of their respective fanbases.

I'm think I'm just as likely to be drafted top 5.

That's a good call. I could see that.

I think it was a mock on ESPN's ticker yesterday had him going there.

Don’t wish that upon me.

Can’t wait for the message board scouts to tell why the pros are stupid and wrong

Been telling yall McCarthy will be one of the first QBs off the board and probably a top 10 pick.
His mentality is alpha as shite and he has run pro sets in college.
Add that to the prototype physical tools and scouts will drool over his potential. It doesn't matter how many times he passed the ball in college.
Also, remember that Mahomes was considered to nobody to then a 2nd rounder, to then a 1st round pick right after his college career was over.
This is just what happens when scouting departments get past the regular season and fall in love with prospects more l.

The best lesson I’ve learned over the last decade is that no one has any idea or clue about QBs, team personnel or otherwise. It’s all hindsight praise for lucky selections.
So the message board guy is just as likely to be right as the team guy when it comes to QBs, bc we’re all just guessing.
This is also a collection of tweets from various “rumor accounts” and local radio accounts so there’s a 98 percent chance this is all pre draft fodder, either from the media or teams trying to get info out that they want to try to influence the QBs that are taken

I pity the team that drafts this kid as their QB of the future.

Weren’t we also told Malik Willis would go high? He was being projected as a top 10 pick by a lot of so called experts

The Bears.
Trade up to pick 0 and watch him bust.

Except it’s not just guessing for the scouts. They watch tape, not just highlights or stat sheets. They look for certain physical criteria. Notice how some teams do better consistently over time.
The disconnect is people treat the perfect as the enemy of the good. They were wrong on some guys so you think they can’t be listened to. The closest analogy I can think of is recruiting rankings. People love to say “stars don’t matter” because some 5* was a complete bust in college and some 2* becomes a first round pick and a star. But a much higher percentage of 5*s go on to be studs and first round picks (the first 3 picks in 2023 all 5*).
There are a million factors that go into why a player, especially a QB succeed. What team drafts him and the offense/coaching and his own work ethic and health among them.
QBs do get over drafted because of the importance of the position but it’s shocking to me how poorly coached most are given the importance
If the fans are right is a blind squirrel finding a nut.
McCarthy has the size and physical tools he’s also only 21. What I’ve read some scouts love what they see in tape I assume processing reads, accuracy, arm strength on the intermediate throws that type of stuff that fans can not judge watching on TV or looking at box scores

I mean people think Herbert is going to be great bc of Harbaugh & this kid just spent 3 years playing for him.

Define a lot also can you name them? There a lot of draft “gurus” out there many of them with no more credibility than you or me. Some throw stuff at the wall based on one or 2 statements. but he did have the physical tools that can get people excited. It’s still way early in the process the first impressions may be good then over the next 2 1/2 months after work outs, the combine interviews etc, maybe it cools off.

I think there’s an obvious top 4 at QB with Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, & JJ McCarthy.
If anyone takes Bo Nix or Penix before any of those 4, I would be shocked.

I would take both Nix and Penix over McMarthy

Well, you’re not an NFL GM are you?

Wouldn’t shock me if a year ago at this time he said Stroud would be a bust because Ohio St QBs never do anything or some brilliant insight like that

If my team traded up for JJ McCarthy, I would probably just stop following the NFL all together.
