Getting kinda snakey early this year

Went out for the first time this year on Feb. 8 and saw 7 snakes & 14 gators. Caught a nice Western rat snake - I think that might be the earliest in the year I’ve ever caught a snake. Saw 3 other species: plain-bellied water snake, broad-banded water snake, and a few MS green water snakes. No cottons yet.

Jealous. I've been dying to go catch snakes bare handed but the damn weather just won't cooperate. Up here in nela we typically don't start picking cotton mouths up barehanded until mid-March.

This past Saturday a buddy of mine walked up on a very big copperhead while squirrel hunting. One of those oh shite moments while walking around the tree looking up trying to spot the tree rat and then looking down and .... there it is.
Saw a pic of it on his phone, alive and dead.

Uh, hopefully it was by natural causes. Like paw always said, the more Copperheads the better

Nope. Hell no bro.
Not touching any of those.

I saw the thread and knew you’d have a post already. I can’t stop chuckling

Only way I'm ever holding a snake like Tigrrr is if I am somehow mummified and one of those nasty bastards crawls thru dead hands. Hell to the no

We've got snakes and gators out already as well.
I honestly cannot remember a February where it's happening before Valentines Day ... before now.

With all those snakes...you sure you're not in D.C?

Hopefully a polar vortex comes in late feb and kills them all. Except the gators

I saw 8 cottonmouths in 2 hours on Saturday. Haven't seen hardly any all hunting season.

I’ve only taken a short walk on my creek, and it was on a cooler, overcast day. The place I saw all these sneks is usually only good for 1-2 cottons on a good day anyway. I’ll give my creek a try on a warmer day soon.

I saw two cottonmouths this time last year. One was a baby, and it was out and about on a day where it was in the low 50s. In Perdido Key.
We've seen a few ribbon snakes at fort pickens this winter, but they are pretty tolerant of cold weather.
I guess you are in South Carolina though?

Yes .... we're runnin' around in shorts and t-shirts right now. Well, the kids are.
I'm thinking about geting my dogs vaccinated. They're wearing me out hitting on the vipers the past week or so. I know the snakes are hungry and out looking for a meal but it's been outta hand so far.
I do expect one more cold front to come down but the forecasters sure aren't predicting it. The 30 day looks like the catfish rut will hit before Easter. I'm not letting the dogs get anywhere near the shore ... you can't vaccinate for grumpy gators this time of year.

Vaccinated? For snakebites? Please explain further, never heard of this.

Actually love observing snakes/gators in the wild, but from a distance. You mentioned no CMs yet, so do snakes hibernate during the winter months?
Also, baby gator riding momma's back is super cool!
