Where (in the BR area) is the best place to get fresh, Louisiana Gulf shrimp? I see a lot of imported (farm raised or wild caught) shrimp in the grocery stores.
Peace.
Peace.

Tony's is best. Jimbo's on Jones Creek is ok.

If you're buying a lot, I would recommend driving down to one of the coastal towns to pick them up. We got some nice 15-20 count shrimp for $2/pound a couple months ago.

The best, freshest shrimp in town are sold on Airline at Tom Drive, just some lady out there with a sign that says Shrimp - she is only out there on Thurs, Fri and Sat, and when she runs out, she's closed for the day. She has the best prices and the freshest shrimp. She only takes cash. Jumbos are usually $4-4.50 per pound.

She used to take food stamps. I've bought from her before and found I had too many pieces of driftwood, ice, junk etc...in the mix. I don't worry too much about it but a friend of mine took hers home and weighed them then removed the junk and weighed them again and she had 1.5lbs of junk. It adds up.
And for what it's worth on shrimp the head is usually about 28-30% of the weight. So in other words if not using the heads do the math to see if it is really cheaper to buy them with the heads on. Obviously this only applies where they are sold both ways.
I bought a 52 quart ice chest slammed full in Dulac a couple of weeks ago for $25.00. Nice, big and a bunch of them.

I never had a problem with the shrimp lady - my stuff was always clean. I sent a friend from work to her and she complained that there were too many small shrimp mixed in with the large, but I didn't really give much thought to it because the lady complains about everything.
People keep telling me I should buy shrimp by the ice chest - I guess I need to start, then I could eat shrimp more.

Thats where I always get mine.
always fresh and decent prices... get there early.
Sweet lady and mine ususally pretty clean, but I only buy a few pounds at a time usually.
I used to load up on with shrimp everytime I went to grand isle, but I am usually going down there 5-6 times a year at least.
Now I just pick up a few pound everytime I am down there and go see the shrimp lady the rest of the time. I would rather eat the fresh shrimp from her, than what I had frozen.

Never bought from the "shrimp lady" but some tricks of the roadside vendors
1) They keep lots of slushy ice water in the chest with the shrimp at the bottom, they keep some large "shower" shrimp in the back and when you walk up they pull some of those shrimp up and show em to you, then when you buy they pull them from a different part of the cooler and they are smaller
2) watch their hands when they are weighing they will "hold" the scale to keep it from turning and they are pressing down on the scale
3)Do a bleach rinse (be care full lots of markets do this as well)
4) make em prove the count, if they say they are 10/14, count out 14 shrimp and they should be a pound or better
