If you include alcohol, my mother drank herself to an early grave.

Naw, four different households.
Two brothers raised with me.
Father OD’d a month before I was born.
Sister was his kid with different mom.
Sister in law was on wife’s side.

My situation is exactly the same as the OP, but its my big brother and he did it to himself in his late 40's huffing spray paint. After a brief stint on the streets (long story about paranoid schizophrenia) he landed back with my elderly parents (in their 80's). My dad found him in the basement with a bag over his head filled with spray paint having just passed out. My poor dad had to get the bag off his head and leave him down there, because he can barely make it up and down the stairs on his own, to call 911. Brother was clean for years, but dealing with tremors/memory loss/depression as a result of long term abuse, until this Christmas when he decided he was fine and stopped taking meds. My poor parents are trying to piece it back together.
He is very lucky my mom and dad are still well and that my dad is still mentally sharp.. but one day soon he will be mine to inherit and worry about and manage meds, etc.. all from another state. Not sure what I am gonna do about that. It will definitely put a strain on my own family.
I feel sorry for him though. I'm not mad at him. Although I understand your temptation to be. People make decisions without thinking about the consequence to others.

I have an insane sister in a similar situation. Has her own apartment and has disability income to pay bills, but is so lazy/sorry that my parents actually cut the checks on her account and make sure shite is paid for. Otherwise, she could have a million bucks in the bank and get evicted because she is too sorry to write the damned rent check.
It is going to be hell for me (and her) if she outlives my mother. I have a $50K life insurance policy on her, but she'll probably sit around doing drugs and outlive us all.

About 24 years ago. I took nitrous while I was driving a motor vehicle. Stupidest thing I ever did. Was on the Interstate in Birmingham. Nailed the side wall. Not because I did wrecked the car. Turned out the car next to me side swiped me at the exact same time. When the car stopped I looked at me friend and he was shocked. He had some sort glasses on and one of the lenses was out. Then a van pulled up next to us and said run boys that guys got a gun. The dude that hit me had gotten out of his car with a gun (gang member) My friend ran and jumped off the interstate. Then out of no where a cop pulled up and I was safe. My friend though we could not find. He had fallen to the road below after jumping off the interstate and crushed his pelvis and hip. Learned a good lesson that night. We did not get in trouble. They found the guys gun in the ambulance at the hospital the driver of that car was fine but was brought in for a ct scan.
What in the ever loving frick?

My daughter's half sister had migraines and her junkie boyfriend who was on methadone treatment gave her one of his pills. She wasn't a junkie and the dose killed her. My daughter found her with her 18 month old boy crawling on her body.
Oh my god.
This is seriously heartbreaking to read.

Sorry for your loss but addiction is a disease not a life style choice. People don’t choose addiction anymore than people choose to become a diabetic, or hypertensive. Studies of that there is a genetic component as well. Addiction has a terrible stigma to it that prevents many not to seek treatment because they are a shame. The good news is there our treatment for all types of addiction.

So the down vote is from my stalker (glad your here this am) or someone ignorant on addiction.

Yes, several family members, including parents.

Too many families have been ruined because of drugs yet the millennial pot heads on this board keep saying how awesome smoking weed every day is.

Yep, two first cousins. Both dead of overdoses within the last year. Best thing my parents ever did was move me the frick out of West Virginia 39 years ago.

I understand this for your brother himself but I would be angry at what he is doing to your parents.
