This was actually fascinating. Youth Olympics women's speed skating-- a Chinese skater started off slow then took off at a full sprint to nearly lap the field, just catching up to the back end of the pack and settling there in first place (one lap ahead).

The rest of the field somehow immediately forgot and ran the entire race not thinking about it. They went the remaining 12 laps as a regular race, the leaders even ended up in their full sprint and finish thinking they were going for first. But they were a full lap behind the entire time and even gave up on the race early because of the move.

Even wilder, her teammate was in on it so when the remaining competitors let up thinking the race was over she just continued to skate for an easy silver.

Video is truly amazing to watch. I've never seen anything like it.

It reminds me how women groupthink even though they know it’s not the right strategy or way of living.

I don’t know much about speed skating, but do they mostly look down at the ice when skating? And glance up to make sure they’re on the right path or in which position?

If so, it would explain how she was able to sprint past them. They may have never seen her because their eyes were down.

Just watched the video. What makes anyone think they forgot who was in first?

They didn’t forget, they just got smoked. Usually athletes are coached to run the race (or skate in this case) with their own game plan in mind. Just because someone sprints out ahead at the beginning doesn’t mean you do the same thing. You gotta run your race.

They were probably thinking they were going to catch her on the backside of the race.

Also… if they weren’t able to catch her, that tells me their pace was off and they weren’t going hard enough. Nobody should ever be able to sprint 1 lap ahead and not have anyone catch up to them.

They weren’t going to catch that first skater regardless

The silver medalist is the one who benefited

This makes no sense. The way it’s described, they stood up a lap early. They should have known the lap count regardless of what she did.

No, she won because she was the fastest..her teammate got 2nd because the others thought race was over when they still had 1 lap left.

The lady's commentary was very good too. That's hilarious.
