OT mechanics: 93' F-150 dies when shifted into reverse, runs fine otherwise..

93 F-150 2wd long wheel base, 300 ci, auto transmission.
I've never heard of this problem before.
The truck belongs to a friend and only has 90,000 miles on it.
I'm going to check it out today.
I'm thinking it could be a bad carrier bearing letting the driveshaft get in a bind in reverse maybe?
Any other guesses?

90k miles on a 30 year old truck?
No clue what the issue is but just wanted to say I am impressed. I think I may have ran, walked, swam and rode my bike more miles than that

It has belonged to 2 old men.
I have a 63 Jeep J-200 with less than 30,000 miles.

Play this song for your friend's truck and see if it helps...
Juvenile - Back That Azz Up

Check the trans filter, fluid and pump. Reverse typically has higher line pressure than forward. Engine may be getting choked out due to torque converter not getting enough pressure and essentially killing the engine.

Was checking some Ford forums and saw this suggested too.
Saw some mentions of getting the wrong filter installed during a service too. The replacement doesn't fit correctly and falls down too low in the pan.
Will definitely check all.

Sounds like that thing has served you well as a grocery mobile for 35 years.

I don’t think a tranny issue would cause it to stall. Try replacing the Idle Air Control Valve and the TPS.

Seems like those would be a constant problem though, and not just in reverse, but maybe I'm missing something?

Use only drive-thrus.

Is it immediately dying like turning of the switch? Does it feel more like it’s being “choked down”?

I don't know yet.
Going to check it out in a couple of hours.
The old man who owns it, isn't very mechanically inclined, so it's hard for me to go by his description of what's going on.

Two thing that immediately come to mind…..some sort of dead short when shifting???? Also a locked up torque converter. Two completely different type of problems could cause it.

Carry a fuel pressure gauge to test fuel pressure… especially if it takes extra time to start. Fuel pumps are a common issue on these trucks.
Also check the shift range sensor. It’s on the shift linkage. Unplug it and see if it dies in reverse then.

Remove and clean the throttle body intake manifold that might get it fixed. Same thing happened to me, 20 minute job. Doubtless a dealership would have wanted $500 just to run some bs diagnostic.
