Questions for people in sales

How stressful is your job?
How many years did it take to start earning six figs?
How many hours do you work on average per week?
Does your job often cut into personal/family time?
Are you “happy” overall with your job?
Any suggestion on what sort of company/role to look for for someone looking to start a career in sales?

I work for an inpatient rehab hospital full time. It’s stupid fricking stressful. I’ve been in medical for 22 years. Earned six figures by year 3. I work about 35-50 hours a week depending how busy it is, sometimes it’s deathly slow. On the busy weeks, which is prob 3 weeks out of the month, I have zero work/life balance. None, literally zero bc my manager is a nazi and is relentless on bringing in patients and referrals. Stay out of long term care if you’re interested in medical and go into Pharma or device instead. I hear that’s much easier and more enjoyable.

So what do you sell?

Physical therapy and occupational therapy services. I basically take the patients that need specialty care or extended care from a regular hospital over to us for care.

How stressful is your job?
Sometimes none whatsoever and other times I’m searching for a bridge to jump off of.

I took the long way around to six figures because I was afraid and didn’t have confidence in myself. It took me an extremely long 12 years.

How many hours do you work on average per week?
Used to be 40 then 60, then 20 and now back to 40.

Does your job often cut into personal/family time?
It used to but the key is to learn what works and what doesn’t work so you can start working smarter, not harder/longer.
quote:
Are you “happy” overall with your job?
I’m not happy that I have to work but overall I’m happy with my job. I enjoy the industry and educating customers.

Depends on what kind of person you are and what interests you. I’m very analytical and found that selling insurance works for me. There’s so many ins and outs with insurance and the lack of understanding on the general public’s part keeps me in business. Everyone hates insurance agents until they need one to make sense of it all for them. Just figure out what you enjoy and how to match that to the requirements of the position then go for it. Learn from those who are more successful than you and never get to the point where you think you know it all. Keep learning.

Who are you selling to? The hospital, the patients, the insurance carriers?

I’ll answer for any honest successful salesman:
Extremely some days. Easier some others.
High pressure one off lead driven sales like cars, roofs, windows, home repairs, etc. it will teach you skill you need for an actual sales career later.

How many hours do you work on average per week?
quote:yes. At least a few times a month minimum. Usually once a week.
Does your job often cut into personal/family time?
quote:the job itself? no. But I enjoy the benefits I get from working it.

The rehab hospital services. I compete with other rehab hospitals in the area for patients. For example, I have a quota of 20 patient admits a month.
Once I get a patient referral from a hospital, i do a bedside visit, then I have to get their chart and write up the evaluation for my medical team to treat when we get them over to us. That usually takes anywhere from 3 hours to 3 days depending on their insurance and how sick they are.

Kinda Stressful, some weeks are hard, some are easy.
2 years.
50-60 average. 40 during the week & 10-20 on-call weekends
Sometimes but if you time manage it isn’t bad.
I’m happy. When at work it doesn’t feel like work. I’m a social guy & most of my day consists of bouncing between places & shooting the shite.
Just interview well. “Sell yourself in the interview”

I worked in sales for a few years and I'd rather live in a van down by the river before I ever got back into sales.
But that's a personal decision.
I've known people who were natural born salesmen, it wasn't even work to them. Like hiring a beagle to chase a rabbit.
To each his own. Find something you are good at, and go do that. If you are good at sales and persuasion, go do that.

How stressful is your job? Moderate Stress
How many years did it take to start earning six figs? 6 months
How many hours do you work on average per week? When I was in Baton Rouge after being in my territory for a couple of years around 35 hrs a week. Now that I’ve moved and starting a new territory around 45hrs to 50hrs but that will come back down in the next 6 months or so.
Does your job often cut into personal/family time? Nope. Complete freedom of my time I am just choosing to work more to get to the income faster starting a new territory.
Are you “happy” overall with your job? Yes. Been with the same company for 21 years. Worked in Phoenix, Charlotte, Baton Rouge and now Conroe Texas.
Any suggestion on what sort of company/role to look for for someone looking to start a career in sales? I came from the ops side of our business so iI was ahead of the curve on product knowledge and already had some sales goals and experience.

To be successful in sales is about making relationships that will last your entire career.
Networking and reputation is what sales is about.
Find your bread and butter and ride them like a champ.

How stressful is your job?
I own my own specialized packaging materials distribution company and run it as a one-man operation. I’ve been doing it that way since 2002. So, having to do every single task necessary can be a bit stressful, but I’ve learned to manage it well. The most stressful part was in the beginning knowing that if I didn’t go out there and sell like a maniac, my family and I wouldn’t eat without my wife going back to work full-time.
How many years did it take to start earning six figs?
2-3 years
How many hours do you work on average per week?
30-50, depending on what’s going on.
Does your job often cut into personal/family time?
Absolutely not. I started my own company and have kept it small (but extremely lean and mean) just so I would never have to miss anything with my family. Kids are grown now and I’m proud to say I literally never missed a thing.
Are you “happy” overall with your job?
In my mind, I haven’t worked a day in over 20 years. I’m completely passionate about what I do.
Any suggestion on what sort of company/role to look for for someone looking to start a career in sales?
Definitely try to find a specialized niche (in my mind it should be B2B) that you find interesting and be completely determined to be the most knowledgeable person in the industry. I am not the most polished salesperson there ever was, but my technical knowledge, customer service skills and willingness/ability to always find a solution is unmatched.

All you need to know is if you ain't packing a big dong then you ain't cut out for sales

I work in software sales (tech companies, B2B). It's not stressful day to day but if you go on a dry streak for a few months you can get fired so you do have to constantly be in motion.
There are people making six figures 3 years out of college for 20-30 hour weeks.
I work 20-30 hours per week.
My job does not interfere with personal time.
I'm fairly happy with my job as it's all results driven and pays extremely well for the amount of work. I've also got a good product in a good territory with a team I like.
There are hundreds if not a few thousand companies that hire entry level business development roles that will pay 80-90k to someone with no experience who is willing to work. I got the guy that cuts my hair with no degree into this. It only goes up from there once you get into closing roles.

First two years were hard, now it’s a cakewalk.
Made 6 figures in year 2, in year 5 my bonus alone is 221k.
Maybe 20-30 hours a week, it doesn’t cut into my personal time I can come and go as I please.

How stressful is your job? Not bad. I’m in the industrial market. Moved from the project labor side to BD. Wouldn’t change it now for anything
How many years did it take to start earning six figs? 1st paycheck, but my base salary is 6 figures by itself and bonus on top. Bonus is pretty much 6 figures+ by itself
How many hours do you work on average per week? 40
Does your job often cut into personal/family time? Never if anything it’s allowed me more time with them
Are you “happy” overall with your job? Extremely
Any suggestion on what sort of company/role to look for someone looking to start a career in sales? Starting is tough. I was slowly eased into it as part of my day to day project management roles. I was lucky enough not to have to start out cold
