Whether voluntarily or by parent's forcing you, have you tried an instrument at some point in your lifetime? School band kazoo or symbols count!
Did you stick with it?
guitar here, 40 year beginner

Piano: 8-16
Guitar 12-25ish
Really wish I would have kept at piano, but at 16 it was the last thing on my mind. I can still sit down and with a little rust busting I can still play most of the old songs i used to play.

Self taught guitarist. Sometimes I wish that I had taken lessons.

Piano when I was in elementary school because my parents made me. Guitar through high school because I thought it was a good way to pick up girls. Turns out I'm tone and sounded like shite.

I took bass guitar lessons when I was a teen. Was starting to pick it up ok. Wish I’d have stuck with it.

When I was little I took flute lessons after catechism. That stopped once I got a little older and my voice got deeper.

Air guitar. Top 100 in the world

No lessons. Taught myself to read music. Play guitar, bass, piano. I can figure out anything stringed. Play almost exclusively baritone guitar now.
Lessons are good but the reality is that if you don’t keep up with it, it will be just like anything else.

Kinda CSB:
My dad graduated from LSU in music and was a music teacher at Dutchtown and then Central Middle. He has been a musician in rock bands since he was 15 playing saxophone. He's even played with some big time bands like Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago as a sessions musician. So he's a badass. I always wanted to be like him and so when I got to middle school and we had band I wanted to play the sax.
But my dad was getting paid school teacher wages and told me that he couldn't afford to buy me a sax. But, he could afford a clarinet and the technique and fingering are virtually the same. Plus, he wasn't sure I'd stick with it so he didn't want to invest in an instrument until I'd proven I'd stick with it. SO he told me that if I played the clarinet for 2 years and practiced and worked hard, I could switch to sax. "But dad, the clarinet is a GIRLS instrument!" I declared. He told me about Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw and told me those guys were well respected musicians.
What choice did I have? So, as a 6th grade boy, with all the insecurities and lack of confidence that comes with being a kid that age, I agreed to play clarinet.
There were probably 12 clarinet players in our band. All of them were girls except me and a kid who was unquestionably the nerdiest, gayest kid in school. I was fricked. I got picked on mercilessly for 6th and 7th grade. I was already a target since I was short and didn't play any sports then. It was brutal.
But I was determined and stuck with it. I never made first chair but I was always in the top 5.
After 7th grade ended I went to my dad and said "OK, I did it, I stuck with it. Either I get to play sax or I'm quitting." He agreed that I'd held up my end of the bargain and we went to Zeigler's music store and he bought me a used alto sax. It was like Excalibur to me. I practiced all summer long, playing everything I could get my hands on.
When school started in 8th grade I took place place with the other BOYS in the sax section and wailed on that baby. I made first chair at the first tryouts and held that all year. I also made honor band and got top awards in solo contests.
I played all the way through high school. I was the drum major in marching band my senior year and we went to state where we came in second.
When I hit college I didn't join the Golden Band from Tiger Land, girls and partying distracted me. Little did I know the GBFTL was an even better place for that.
But I didn't and I haven't played since then.
I would have to start from scratch to play again.

Piano: 9-14 (Dropped lessons to focus on band in HS)
Trumpet: 12-22 (Jr high through college with Tiger Band)
Still play piano/synths. No longer play trumpet since my coonhound absolutely HATES it.
Also play guitar, and bass but never did lessons. Probably would be a better player if I had. I have no doubt developed some bad habits and have poor technique on both.

Percussion. Mostly self-taught but I did take drum lessons for about a year which helped out considerably.

Decided to join band in the 6th grade. Chose Trumpet. Band director said I couldn’t play the Trumpet, and said I should try the Euphonium because of the size of the mouthpiece. So I tried it out and was naturally pretty good at it. Did it through high school but didn’t take it any further. I really wasn’t into band and musical instruments, so it was hard for me to really get into it, like all the other band kids. But I do think every kid should be forced to learn a musical instrument for at least a year in middle school.

Played piano and trumpet. Haven't played either in over 30 years.
