I never knew it was originally written as a movie and was going to star John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart.
I for one am glad it did not go that route. Wayne is great, but nobody could play Gus as good as Duval. Same goes for Call and Jones. Glover also did very good playing Deets and Lane did great playing Lorena. I really dont think they could have put together a better cast.

The original Lonesome Dove story had been written as a movie script for a 1960s film to be directed by Peter Bogdanovich and star John Wayne, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda, but Wayne turned the part down on John Ford's advice and Stewart backed out as a result, so the movie was abandoned and McMurtry later turned the script into a full-scale novel, Lonesome Dove, which eventually became a television miniseries with Tommy Lee Jones in the Wayne role, Robert Duvall in the Stewart part, and Robert Urich filling in for Fonda as the cowboy regretfully hanged by his own friends. James Garner had been offered Robert Duvall's role in the original miniseries but had to turn it down for health reasons, and eventually wound up playing the part first portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones and originally created for John Wayne instead.[1]

Interesting tidbit. Glad the book came out first. It won a Pulitzer, and deserved it. It's one of my favorites.
BTQ you're right about everything you said in your initial post. Duval = priceless.

No Doubt. Simply perfect.

Btw, I read all four novels in the Lonesome Dove saga and the others are good too, especially Comanche Moon and Dead Man's Journey.

Don't forget the powerhouse performance by Ricky Shroeder as Call's illigitmate son.

Lonesome Dove > (though just barely) Comanche Moon > Dead Man's Walk > Streets of Laredo

I wore out the VHS tapes of this movie over the years until I finally found it on DVD.
Greatest ever.
Duval and Tommy Lee Jones brought that thing to life.

So here is something I have always debated in my mind. I would say this may be my favorite movie of all time. It is at least in the top 3. So when somebody asks for my top 5 Movies do I include Lonesome Dove or does the fact that it was made for TV disqualify it from the listing. What do you think?

Its a miniseries....which is basically a movie divided up into so many episodes.

That is what I concluded as well. It certainly does not classify as a tv show. I love it too much to not recognize it on a favorites lists. You know, it is kind of like Band of Brothers in the sense that you never hear anybody give negative feelings on it.

quote:Exactly how I rated them. Streets of Laredo was my least favorite by a good margin.
Lonesome Dove > (though just barely) Comanche Moon > Dead Man's Walk > Streets of Laredo
The two prequels are excellent books.

Thats how I rated them. The first three are great novels but I could barely finish Streets of Laredo.

I always had the same question about whether to include mini series in lists of favorite movies.
Lonesome Dove is one of my favorites also and I'd put it up against any of my favorite movies.
I'm also a big fan of Band of Brothers which I thought was better than Saving Private Ryan.
Maybe the mini series is an underappreciated art form. I remember way back to Rich Man, Poor Man which I think was the original and to Roots.

The fact that it was made for TV doesn't disqualify it, but the fact that it's a mini-series does. If I were to include with movies though I would have to say it would without a doubt be in my top 10, possibly my top 5.
