I have an outdoor basketball court for my boys. They’re constantly leaving the basketballs laying in the yard, in the rain. etc.
I want to build a 5-6 foot long wooden chest for ball storage next to the court. I’d like to have a weatherproof lid for the chest, actually the lid would have a cushion on top, so that when the lid is closed, the chest could become a bench for onlookers, those who got “next”, etc. So it would be a bench/ ball storage.
1. Should I put some type of liner inside the storage compartment, instead of just wood?
2. For the seating portion, should I look at what is used in boating, where can I find some type of waterproof seating?
3. Does anyone know of someone who’s built something similar to this?

Any information you might have would help

What about a fiberglass deck box? If you wanted to church it up you could get a smaller one then build your box and use it as an insert?

Definitely agree with the deck box, many of them that come with seats built in. In fact, this made me think of the same thing for my setup.

If you’re dead set on building it, it depends on how it’s constructed and what wood species is used.

Deck box would be infinitely cheaper and easier.

deck box is watertight also
there will be dimples in the bottom for you to fasten it down you can use hilti anchors and cinch it right down to the court

Speaking from experience, a deck box won’t keep basketballs or whatever from being left in the yard.

Make them buy their own balls a couple of times to learn the value of money.
