Amen, man. Ive forgone a lot of career opportunities to be able to be present for my daughter in divorce.

Why did you get divorced? Did y’all try marriage counseling ?

It was the toughest time in my life, someone mentioned the Sunday evening goodbyes, those were brutal. I had two Daddies girls and they would cry every time they went back to their mom. A vengeful/ unhappy ex wife can make it unbearable at times. I was never a heavy drinker, but I quit drinking because depression can set in quick. My advice would be after the shock of the divorce subsides, try and have a healthy relationship with your ex when it comes to parenting. It was impossible with my ex so I focused on being there for my girls, and being the best Dad I could be. Fast forward 16 years , I’ve been remarried for 10 years with a massive upgrade. my girls are 21 and 18 and both love me and look to me for direction and advice in life. Their mom is still the angry bitter person she was all those years ago.

It does absolutely suck. Not only that, but I have almost no relationship with my teenage daughters. That is the worst part.
My 12 yo son is with me for the next week and I am soaking it up.

I fought for and won primary custody.
It was a tough get but it can happen.

I’ll echo everyone else and tell you it sucks. No two ways about it. My ex left me so I didn’t get much say. She also moved an hour away. I had a 4 yo daughter and a 9 yo son and seeing them cry during the handoff was absolutely brutal. We had my daughter preschool orientation not a month after we separated. We arrived in two cars and left in two cars. I ended up next to their car at a red light and my daughter was reaching for me and crying her heart out.
No amount of physical pain will ever surpass how badly that hurt.

That’s the kind of pain that wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. You never forget it, my prayers are for anyone here currently or has gone through it.

One of the Hardest things I ever had to do.

I just focused on what I could control, gym time and hobbies while getting acclimated to the alone time.

It sucks. Doesn’t get better.

It's difficult and heartbreaking at best. At worst you'll have a vindictive, angry, ex who actively attempts to poison your children against you. It's taken years of therapy for my youngest to eventually come to terms with the fact that her own mother lied incessantly to her about me. You're not supposed to be damaged that way by one of the two people you should trust the most in your life.

Have you ever seen Mrs. Doubtfire?
My youngest is 8 today, so only 10 more years until I can opt out without a penalty.

70-80% of divorces are initiated by women so most men have no say so.

My son is 2 hours away. It's tough and I can't say it's gotten easier as the years have gone by. I just try and most of the time when he's here with me

Absolutely not realistic for most men. You happen to be in the 10% or so that got custody.
