LONDON (AP) — The elusive artist Banksy displayed his latest work on a London street corner and it was taken less than hour after he confirmed its installation Friday.

A red stop sign with three military drones on it was taken in the middle of the day by a man with bolt cutters as witnesses snapped photos and shot video in the Peckham section of south London.

People commenting on Banksy’s Instagram accurately predicted it wouldn’t be there long after the artist posted a photo of it. Some of his work has sold for tens of millions of dollars.

quote:

“I went there thinking that people want that, I wanted to see it before something happened to it,” a man who only wanted to be known as Alex told the Press Association.

He was among the many onlookers who watched in awe as a man in a red and black jacket climbed up on a bike next to the post where the sign was bolted to and began hitting it with his hands.

“We said, ‘What are you doing?’ but no one really knew what to do, we sort of just watched it happen,” Alex said. “We were all a bit bemused; there was some honking of car horns.”

The man then left and returned a few minutes later with bolt cutters to finish the job. Another man stabilized the Lime rental bike he stood on and he then removed it and ran away.

Banksy’s thought-provoking street art is often seen as making a political statement. His Instagram followers widely interpreted his latest work as calling for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

An artists hangs a piece of art potentially worth thousands of dollars at the very least and millions at the very most. And someone stole it???

Also…was it illegally placed on public property?

elusive artist Banksy

Banksy is a group of people who are much better at generating publicity than they are at creating art.

Banksy's "art" is uninspiring graffiti trash.

Hmm. Almost as if it was all set up by a group looking to generate some publicity.

Banksy's stop sign art estimated to be worth 500,000 pounds

Banksy's name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. In a 2003 interview with Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian, Banksy is described as "white, 28, scruffy casual—jeans, T-shirt, a silver tooth, silver chain and silver earring. He looks like a cross between Jimmy Nail and Mike Skinner of The Streets." Banksy began as an artist at the age of 14, was expelled from school, and served time in prison for petty crime. According to Hattenstone, "anonymity is vital to him because graffiti is illegal".

Street artist Banksy is estimated to have a net worth of more than $20 million (£15million) a year. But how does he make his money?

I'd pay the fine and for them to replace the stop sign with a new one. I'm stashing the art somewhere and never revealing where, I'd probably say I threw it in a river or something. What are the additional charges? None?

I mean, we stole a couple street signs as kids. Is there additional charges because an unknown graffiti artist vandalized it first?

IDK. Some of it is very clever and well done to me.

I've seen plenty of clever and well done graffiti on railcars.

It's still vandalism and overall makes things look like shite.
