With a 12 team playoff, conference championship games should be eliminated

Winner of the conference gets an auto bid, and I'd imagine it will end up being winner of the 4 major conferences get the byes.
Top 4 conference champs get byes.

I can see them getting rid of conference championships... let's pretend it was this this year, and Texas already in the SEC.
Georgia, Alabama and Texas are in, no doubts there. No conference championship would mean UGA has a bye and the #1 overall seed; and Bama and Texas both hosting 1st rd games.

Bama doesn't make the championship, it's between Texas and UGA (head to head comes into play here). Bama is safely in place for hosting, maybe as the 5th or 6th seed. Texas would be playing to get a bye, but if they lose they may drop to the 8th seed. Uga would drop to the 5th seed if they lose.
It's a big risk for the 2nd place team, if they can't spring the upset. You kick into a more competitive 1st round game, and probably end up facing #1 in the 2nd rd.

Not true, at least by rule.

Odds are they will be conference champs, yes. But it’s not set in stone that the top 4 are all conference champs. I promise you there will be years that #4 will be an at large bid. If not higher.
