Bryce Young is making less than Jamarcus because of Jamarcus. Purdy was a 7th round pick, 7th round picks never made much, most of them from even his draft a year ago have probably been cut or at best are in taxi squad

Prior to the Russell debacle, rookies could renegotiate after their first year, which Purdy obviously would have done. The current CBA doesn't allow for that. A rookie contract can't be renegotiated, and players on those deals can't be extended until after their third season. So, yes, Purdy most definitely has Russell to thank for his situation, which is much worse in year two than Young’s.

All of this.

Being mad that Mr. Irrelevant is paid less than a college player is beyond stupid if you understand how many 6&7 round draft picks aren’t around 2 years later.

For reference, Tom Brady was a 6th round draft and still played a year after winning the Super Bowl @ ~$850k.

Of course they backed the truck up after that just like Purdy will get next year.

Not to defend JR but he wasn’t the only 1-1 that busted, the contracts for the top picks were getting out of control it was Sam Bradford’s deal that really lead to the new structure

Is there an example of a late round pick doing this? getting a new deal after their rookie year? Antonio Brown and Brady got new deals after year 2, though neither played much as rookies.

Would he? The old deals were 3 years vs 4, so he’d still be under contract and did have UCL surgery, he avoided the Tommy John surgery, but there were questions if he’d be available to start the season. Seems like it would have been prudent for SF to wait and see

Wait..what? You have to link me.

What does the #1 pick have to do with this? J-Russ had a legit contract

Also, note: he wasn't the last #1 QB prior to the rookie scale, so what does he have to do with anything?
