It’s only been since 2016 that people started quitting on bowl games if they weren’t playing for a championship. Even since then, 3 of the last 7 Heisman winners played in a bowl game that was not involved in the playoffs.

The playoff started in 2014 the Heisman winners since then
Mariota - playoff
Henry - playoff
Jackson - Citrus Bowl
Mayfield - playoff
Murray - Playoff
Burrow - playoff
Smith - playoff
Young - Playoff
Williams - Cotton Bowl
Daniels - Reilaquest Bowl

But players didn’t start opting out of bowl games until Fournette and McCaffrey did in 2016.

And Bryant Young played in a non-playoff bowl last season. #1 pick in the draft wanted to play with his team mates one last time.

If LSU was in the Playoffs, there is zero question he would play.

Damn Daniels and Jackson look like the only 2 heisman winners to get their teams to shite bowl games.

This isn't a championship game. There is nothing for JD to gain in this. LSU can handle it without him.

Because it is rare for a Heisman winner not to be playing for the championship in modern times.

I get wanting to see JD5 play again but him playing in this bowl game won't make or break the season. He's already won the heisman. He's gonna go in the first round and be an ambassador for our school at the next level. We shouldn't need him to beat Wisconsin, and if we do then we're in bigger frickin trouble than we thought and next years gonna be rough.

The dude took his share of criticism over the 2 seasons we got him for, alot of it fricking stupid and dismissed by his eventual climb to being the best player in CFB this year. I dont need him to break his leg in the frickin reliaquest bowl to call him a real football player or a true tiger.

Bryce Young played last season with nothing left to prove, but I don't blame JD.

Bryant Young played in the 1994 Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame technical had an outside shot at the National Title.

Bryce Young played for Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last year. And good for him, I don’t fault players either way.

Don’t blame the players, they didn’t create the sports culture we live in that treats anything short of the championship as failure. Also Fournette battled injuries that year and there was a coaching change. The Sugar Bowl does still carry a little more prestige than the Sun or Citrus Bowl

Ditto! JD5 gave everything he had this season. No doubt if we had a defensive squad comparable to that 2019 group, LSU would be in the playoffs contending for another championship, but….I would have loved to see JD5 one more time, but I respect his decision.

We get to see next QB up to give us an idea of what we can expect next season!
